Put a note through some of your neighbours' letterboxes saying what you want. You'll probably find that they're throwing them out for recycling all the time. Ask for ones which have the metal screw on lids. They can be re-used for chutney, jam and marmalade, etc as long as they're thoroughly washed and sterilised.

Where do you get all your preserve jars?

I've bought 15p mint sauce in Tesco & threw it out (cheap jars;)) DH was disgusted:eek:

I've asked people to save them, but not had much luck yet.

Is there some trick I don't know?

    Hi Mrs E :)

I bought a couple from Lakeland to start me off, as it takes me forever to get through a pot of jam. Then the collection just built up as I saved the jars I used up. I have huge ex-gherkin ones, some pretty ones that had some posh mayo in, ordinary ex-bought jam jars, and a couple of tall ex-passata ones which I actually keep my dried spaghetti and rice noodles in ;) People I have given HM preserves to tend to give them back (eventually ;) ) but no-one ever remembers to save me any "new" ones either (though tbh, I don't think most of my family remember to bother rinsing them to recycle rather than dumping in the bin, but there you go :) )
Love and compassion to all x

    freecycle.

i always bring a jar of jam along and somehow more appears when i ask for it.

When you give them away, ask for them back to refill. I make far more than we eat and need to learn to cut down :(

Well, although I don't buy jam or chutney there are still a few things I buy which come in jars; mayonnaise, tomato puree, honey, olives, sun-dried tomatoes etc. Well washed these are fine for preserving.
  • I put an add on freecycle.
One person gave me about 10 of the larger baby food jars, and another person gave me a load of mixed jars, that was enough till I had my own.

  • i bought morrisons lemon curd for 24p a jar and threw it out.. TBH it was so hideous (dont think it had been in the same room as a lemon, it was just grease and sugar) i wasn't sad to waste it as a replaced it with home grown, home made victoria plum jam!
  • I reuse pickle and jam jars from the supermarket and ask relatives for jars, I've got a right stash now. Usually if I make some chutney or something, I get my jars returned when they're empty for a refill :)
I'd ask on Freecycle too, there are always a lot of folks offering jam jars on our local board.

arggh I dont buy stuff i dont like just for the jars! for large jars then i use the baby beetroot or pickled onion (if i have had to buy some) jars, medium jars tend to be jam or preserves, and small are - well - not used by me!
I also ask relatives, friends to save jars for me, unsuitable ones go in recycling, but i can usually find a use for jars!
