But how much backup? There has already been a post where it has cost €1400 to get a family back by booking new flights. I don't know about you but I can't hit my bank account for an unexpected £1300. I have that money but not at immediate notice. That is the reality. Most people I reckon would-be struggling to scrape together £200 in a hurry.

If I couldn't scrape £200 together I wouldn't be booking foreign holidays. There are plenty of things you can do in the UK and at low cost. It's irresponsible, especially given that these will also be the people that don't take insurance because they can't afford it.

Back on topic, I do not understand why ryanair are not giving people notice and the option to re-book now with another airline rather than giving just a few hours notice?

They must know which flights they are going to cancel so why not limit the damage by publishing the information now rather than leaving it too late for people to re-arrange, flights, car hire, accommodation etc.

With or without a credit card, this could prove very costly for some and is surely a disastrous exercise for ryanair in terms of PR.

We'll that will probably stop 90% of people who go on package holidays to Spain, Portugal etc.

I think you ought to join the real world of the budget traveller/ holidaymaker who can probably only scrape together a couple of hundred euros of spending money after paying for the holiday which they've been saving up for for months.
  • I'm a huge fan of Ryanair and have defended them many times on these pages.
But this is without doubt a corporate clusterf@ck on a grand scale.
What's made it worse is that its voluble and charismatic CEO Michael O'Leary has been noticeable by his absence.
I expect my substantial holding of FR shares to take a hit in the next few days but long term it is still hard to fault the business model.

    Rubbish.
200 quid is a good night out for most people on their holidays.
The idea that holidaymakers taking a Ryanair flight with bags full of tins of Spam,Aldi's bargain bin supplies and three days worth of cheese and ham sandwiches is risible.

Ooh aren't you the literal one.

I meant spending money for their holiday which you probably realised but you just couldn't help making a stupid comment.

They wouldn't take Aldi bargain bin stuff anyway, Dia is cheaper

You obviously like spending money like water. My wife and I never spend more than €500 during our 10 day holiday in Spain

Wasn't in in Channel 4's 'How'd you get so Rich' episode on Steve Smith the founder of Poundland who sold up to become a multimillionaire, where Steve was shown packing his tinned Spam and other such foods for a holiday in Tenerife?

So if Ryanair cancel my flight to Fuerteventura, what happens to the accommodation I have also booked through them as part of my Ryanair Holiday package?

easyJet had a bout of cancelling 20+ flights back in August but the media didntnseem interested. Same issue as Ryanair, too many flights with not enough time off for pilots.

Got my EU compo but not the point, travelers with babies, on a tight budget, needing to get to work - all just dumped on because EJ wanted to fly more flights per day than pilots can fly.

When plane runs on time, they can fly 3-4 routes in the day/within pilot hours, but a delay on one flight puts all the others out and you end up with pilot flying more than allowed hours.

If Ryanair have been 80% punctual, suggests lots more delays than usual and so pilots need their break time.
