Public vs private sector pay is too political to be done correctly. Just set it so both are the same (adjusted for qualifications hours and security). Last I checked that meant the public sector would need to tale a 3% pay cut and then it can be linked direct to private sector pays thereafter

They can't win, can they? If they do nothing it's 'uncaring Tory Government ' and if they do something right it's because of 'Pressure'.

The right thing has been done and the Government is STILL being slated.

I think if you speak to a Prison Officer or a Police Officer you'll hear that the right thing would have been not to impose such awful cuts in staffing in the first place. Then perhaps our prisons and police services wouldn't be in such a terrible state.

I don't recall the up front admission that performance would suffer as a result of austerity. Instead we got (and still do) constant denials and exercises in obfuscation, our services would be more efficient and delivery would not be effected they said. You should expect better performance from our Government.
I took them at their word, was I wrong to?

Its the continual lying and obfuscation about the parlous state of our services by the Govmt and as you said the denial that performance would be affected by austerity that is so reprehensible.

Mark Fairhurst, acting national chairman of the POA, said the recent unrest underlines “disarray” in British prisons, which he said had lost 8,000 staff since 2010 despite inmate numbers increasing.

“Morale is at an all-time low and as fast as the Service recruit new staff, staff leave in their droves,” he added, calling for an independent review and the 1 per cent pay restraint being scrapped.

“It is time for the Government to act and act quickly.”
Statistics released by the MoJ last week showed that attacks and self-harm have reached an all-time high in prisons in England and Wales, where there were 97 suicides in the past year.

There were 26,643 assaults in the 12 months to March, including a record 7,159 attacks on staff - averaging out at nearly 20 every day.

Campaigners and watchdogs have issued a catalogue of warnings about violence, drug use and overcrowding across the prisons estate in England and Wales, which has been hit by a number of disturbances in the last year.

The Howard League for Penal Reform said chronic overcrowding and staff shortages were driving a “rising tide of violence, human misery [and] chaos”.

What does a private sector policeman or prison officer earn?

Rumours this morning that any pay award for Screws and Rozzers will still be sub 2%. This will do nothing for the staff retention crisis in the Prison Service unfortunately. Smacks of the Tories caving into political pressure by giving a perfunctory rise in pay rather than wanting to solve the mounting problems. Terrible way to run a country.

What level of pay rise do you think is appropriate?

It needs to at least mirror the current rate of inflation which as of this morning is running at 2.9%. The chronic problems in the Prison Service however probably require even more investment by Government. The current basic wage for a new entry Prison Officer is little more than £20K pa and 'experienced' staff like me in closed grades and on old t&c's are marooned on just over £29K pa, a rate of pay that hasn't changed much for almost a decade. I was earning £28K in 2008!
Government has a responsibility to run our public services better than they are, they seem incapable or more worryingly unwilling to do so.

Aren't the prision staff mostly private sector now?

As for policemen I'm sure comparable private sector workers to compare could be found. Eg security guards.

A security guard is in no way similar to a police officer. Hahaha.

    Stop being ridiculous.

https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2017/sep/12/world-stock-markets-record-highs-uk-inflation-data-business-live Inflation up to 2.9%. 1.7% average given to prison Officers and 2% to the Police. Outrageous!
