Slimming World say you can make gravy somehow by reducing down stock and stuff. I can't see that working myself.

The only good gravy I've made is with Hairy Bikers braised steak and that's virtually free. It should work with cubed steak but haven't tried it yet.

I have heard of people adding in Smash powder but that's a cheat.

I add smash if I need to thicken it at last minute. Rice if I know it needs thickening with 30-60 minutes to go, or lentils if it has over an hour left till dinner.

Smash is technically a tweak, but I see it as no different to eating mash with your casserole.
