Part of the ethos of "Old Style" to me, is looking for ways to simplify my life. One frustration I have, is that I feel I've got way too many towels - bath and hand size. I've yet to actually count them, but they fill half a standard size airing cupboard.
Now, I appreciate all house holds are different and I live alone (only one bathroom), with my partner staying at the weekend. My parents died a few years ago and I kept some towels when clearing their home, but they don't have sentimental value.
Therefore I'm left wondering, how many is too many?! A minimum for two people would be two hand towels and two bath towels, so one is in the wash, while one is in use, but that sounds a bit too extreme to me!

I have close to 20 bath towels but have 4 bedrooms and three bathrooms and can have 7 people all wanting showers so really only two days bath towels.0

I am in the same position as you ....
I've got towels I bought donkeys' years ago - and a towel a friend bought me for Xmas 15 years ago.
I've got 3 new towels bought 8 years ago that I've barely used... because they're "too nice".
I've also got "house clearance towels", not many, but about 3 bath sheets.
And then .... just for good measure ... when I bought this house 3 years ago I got sent a random house-warming gift from an aunt of .... a whole BALE of quality towels.
For hand towels, I think I'm a little lacking as I have had to buy two new ones in the last couple of years... and could probably do with another couple in the next 1-2 years... but that'll be it "for life".
The thing is .... they will all come in useful one day. I've got "enough towels for the rest of my life" now.
So, rather than throw them out, one solution is to at least vacuum pack them and keep them in a smaller space, for that day when you just need another towel. Vacuum packing, when sealed correctly, is airtight for years... and if it leaks, then just re-vacuum it and/or buy a new vacuum bag (now often available in £1 shops).0 -
There are 2 of us and there are 3 bath towels and 4 hand towels between us.Chin up, Titus out.0

Far more than we need!!
I have two sets for normal use (each set comprises two bath towels, two hand towels and four flannels - one set in the wash and one in use). I then have a set for guests (two bath towels and two hand towels).
On top of that I have a miscellaneous set of bath towels and hand towels that we've accrued over the years - a set of huge thick super-luxurious bath towels that someone gave us, which I don't use because they take forever to wash and dry, 6 beach towels, and an under-bed drawer full of mismatched towels that I'd completely forgotten about until I was looking for something else the other day!!!
My excuse is that we have 5 kids and they still visit from time to time. If they all arrived at once (with partners/kids/dogs) I'd like to think there would be enough towels to go round! No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
I've never counted but mine aren't all in the airing cupboard.
I keep the bathroom towels in the airing cupboard. The ones for the kitchen and downstairs cloakroom are in a kitchen drawer. In my guest room I keep two sets in the wardrobe easily to hand when people come to stay.
I'd get rid of any that are a bit past it (animal sanctuaries welcome them). Put away really new ones and just keep the ones you use regularly in the airing cupboard.0 -
There are two adults in this house with one bathroom.
I think we have six bath towels, and probably 4 hand towels.
At any one time, we have two bath towels in the bathroom plus one hand towel. Then a hand towel in the kitchen.0 -
It's just me and OH, and we bought a new set of towels last year as our old ones were very old indeed. We now have four bath sheets, four 'ordinary-size' towels and four hand towels. I also have a couple of fancy Hammam hand towels and four bath mats.0
