    Wow indeed.
Anyone else surprised that in 2015 the UK paid a mere £3bn less than Germany yet a whopping £8bn more than France?
How the movers and shakers on mainland Europe ever allowed a situation where the UK is now on the cusp of leaving is unfathomable.
    Hey-ho.

Me. I've always been amazed at the contempt that Merkel showed Cameron and the British electorate.

Whatever happened to "he who pays the piper calls the tune?"

I think they thought that threats to hurt the city of London would keep us quiet.

It is all very sad to see the Brexit negotiations collapse into name calling and he said she said slanging matches.
Who thought it would be this way.
Of course a deal will be done. Frankly afterwards perhaps it will be difficult to find anyone who is not disappointed with it.

Britain needs to be getting on with its Brexit export boom so it is ready and nimble for the new opportunities.

The EU need to get this deal done and dusted as soon as possible as it is a distraction (Britain is leaving)

Businesss need to put into action Any and all contingency plans as any business leader caught out will surely have to look for a new job.

Citizens of the EU27 living/working in Britain and Brits living/working in the EU27 better also act on their contingency plans if they can.

As a remainer I continue to believe it is not in Britains interests to leave the EU and if I were able to stop it I would.

Uncertaintanty is the biggest danger to both economy's as I have often mentioned. That "death by a thousand cuts" as people and businesses take decisions that are not in Britains interests but uncertainty forces them to be made.
Posters here and I amongs them will continue to squabble over the minutiae of everything but you should except that this whole thing is a mess and damaging to both sides.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

Only mainland European hubris, the sort the EU specialises in is stopping this from being described as the major geo-political failure this really is.
    Ho-hum.

Has it? You may realise that in the UK there's the perception of being better than Spain, Italy or Portugal or the likes, but reality is folks in those countries are actually better off financially.
Are you honestly saying Portugal and Spain are better off, have you seen property prices recently, have you seen the ghost towns in portugal, masses and masses of half built nothing, why is it so cheap for a quick holiday in Spain these days? An average Brit could sell up tomorrow, sell their house and buy 3 over there by comparison. Do you think Italy's economy isnt tanking, are you sure it isnt?

Labour is now the party of “soft Brexit” and could keep Britain in the European Single Market and Customs Union indefinitely, Tom Watson has admitted.

Mr Watson confirmed Labour is positioning itself as the party of “soft Brexit”

So hot on the heels of the debacle over their lies to students, Labour have now backtracked on their lies to Brexit supporters.

Students & the Brexit-supporting working-class, two of Labour's biggest groups of supporters, both blatantly misled & lied to on the issue that probably mattered most to them.

Labour's shambles over its key Brexit policy deepened today after deputy leader Tom Watson said the party might seek “permanent” membership of the single market and the customs union. The senior MP changed the line just days after shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer announced that Labour would back temporary membership of both free trade clubs for up to four years after leaving the EU in 2019.

The shifting position by the two shadow Cabinet members follows a bitter war over Brexit policy sparked by shadow chancellor John McDonnell and leader Jeremy Corbyn flatly ruling out staying in the single market after the election.

Mr Watson also agreed that Labour was now the party of “soft Brexit”. Asked on Newsnight if the term reflected the party’s position, he said: “Yes, you have seen Keir Starmer’s statement, we think that being part of the customs union and the single market is important in those transitional times because that is the way you protect jobs and the economy, and it might be a permanent outcome of the negotiations, but we have got to see how those negotiations go.”

Labour’s Brexit turns out not to mean Brexit at all, says STEPHEN POLLARD

THERE'S an old joke which I’ve always found rather unpleasant but there are times when it is all too true: how can you tell when a politician is lying?
When his lips move. On July 23 Jeremy Corbyn gave an interview on the Andrew Marr Show in which he unambiguously and unequivocally confirmed that a Labour government would take Britain out of the EU single market.
As he put it: we have to leave it because the single market is “dependent on membership of the EU”.
