My partner and I are moving from near London to west Yorkshire. We hardly have any furniture but he is a bit of a collector and has lots of stuff. At the moment it's all boxed up ready to go. It's taking up three 200 square foot storage units.
Decluttering is not an option : his collections are his pride and joy.
But the quote we had is £15000. It seems a huge amount. We hired a man and van to move stuff from his old house into storage and paid two brilliant guys £550 to move it all in one day. So a bit stunned by this quote. Any thoughts? Man and van isn't an option as it's 200 miles so they can't do return trips. We don't need packers. Just someone to collect it and move it. I had a huge boat moved from Yorkshire to London a couple of years ago and that was only £1500 including the crane!!!!
Ideas and recommendations appreciated.

That sounds as though they are covering themselves in case collectors items that they didn't pack get damaged in the move.
In other words, they are not willing to accept the risks without a sizeable payment. TBH can't really blame them if you are asking them to move 600 sq m of collectible items sight unseen.0 -
They say they don't do return trips but assume if you offered them a lot more cash they probably would?0

* Get more quotes from national and local companies
* Try less popular dates
* Hire a man & van, pay for food and hotel on top of their fee
* Rent a van and make a few trips
* Rent a few vans and ask friends/family to help drive up, and pay them in pizza / beer / free weekend break in Yorkshire/London depending on where they're from0 -
typo in the quote? £1500 would seem about right0

We did 200 miles with Bishop's Move 2 years ago, 3 bed detached house's worth, cost £2300 for a fully packed service. Get more quotes!0

For 3 200sq ft storage units 200miles...
200sqft is a full size removal lorry, so the op needs 3, that's 3 drivers, 3 lorrys, 400 miles each.
I agree more quotes are needed, but lets be realistic, OP has a LOT of stuff, and will pay accordingly.0 -
Agree with more quotes - not sure why you've only had one.
My neighbour moved to Ireland from London a few weeks ago and was quoted around the £5k mark including packing which he thought was extortionate and declined. At the end of a nightmare week of packing with 2 young kids and a dog, they wished they'd paid for the packing too. Not sure what they paid in the end but it was obviously significantly under that.2024 wins: *must start comping again!*0
