Nut allergy.

Twice recently I've been on a plane and there has been an announcement about a passenger with a nut allergy, so they won't be selling any products that may contain nuts.
Why should 180 other people have to suffer because of one person?
The sufferer should either take the risk, or charter their own private transport.
In future I'm going to take my own peanuts to eat on the plane.

Say they take the risk and go into anaphylactic shock, would you be happy to have your flight delayed while it gets diverted to the nearest airport so they can receive medical attention?

I'm sure you could go a few hours without nuts, it's not going to be life threatening for you not to eat them! Alternatively, you could always charter your own private transport, then you could eat as many peanuts as you desired.....
  • Please look up "Raising awareness of nut allergies for Amy May".

Amy May Shead who was mentioned on This morning recently; who sorry to see had suffered an anaphylactic shock a couple of years ago.
Life sure never the same again.

Plus seeing someone die of anaphylactic shock would be a distressing experience for the passengers around them! Most of the time I agree that an allergy sufferer should not expect the world to change for them and I don't think many do expect that. But I can understand airlines being cautious in this situation because the allergy sufferer cannot get themselves out of the situation once the 'plane takes off. I am actually surprised that airlines had not switched to alternatives years ago (e.g. something like pretzels).

Because killing someone on the plane could give you far worse consequences than not eating nuts for a few hours?

You could have chartered your own plane and not had to endure the after effects of someones life threatening allergy.

Im sure your attitude would change if you had severe allergy would it not. Or would you never fly and never eat out and lock yourself in a dark room everyday just in case?

Imagine having to think about opening your mail and the niggle that the postie may have been eating nuts on his rounds?

Or that bag of sweets that says packed in the same factory as peanuts and having to goto the doctors and sit supervised with an Epi-Pen on hand?

I think some people say they have a nut allergy when they have a nut intolerance - which not quite as severe.

However, having seen someone have a very severe reaction to someone shelling pistachio nuts a few yards away, I'd rather not inflict that on anyone in a confined space - that's the person who's asking for consideration and the passengers around them who should be able to manage without eating anything that may contain nuts.

To say "Why should 180 other people have to suffer because of one person?" is slightly OTT, don't you think?

Excellent idea. Do make sure you have enough savings when they bill you for the emergency landing and body repatriation though. But other than that, yes, go you!

For some people, even being breathed on by someone who's eaten peanuts is enough to bring on anaphylactic shock

So, 180 other people on the plane have to suffer watching someone go into severe anaphylactic shock, possibly watch them die (and maybe this person had relatives/friends on the plane whose suffering at the event would be unbearable)...the staff on the plane have to deal with the event...all passengers have to suffer the diversion of the plane....emergency services are called to deal with the event....

...and all because one selfish passenger couldn't go for a couple of hours without their snack of choice.

OP...if you are serious, I really hope you are found out if you try and open a packet of nuts after a warning has been given.

A man sitting four rows away had apparently ignored the warnings and opened a packet of nuts, causing Fae’s face to swell, her mouth to blister and leaving her struggling to breathe.

Although her mother rushed her to the front of the plane, the air conditioning on board meant nut particles were circulated around the flight and Fae passed out.
