Not forgetting the amount paid in. If the payer-in confirms the amount, either on a paying in slip or by inserting a debit card and pressing the OK button, there is evidence if they back later claiming that they handed over more than they actually did.

Wouldn't the receipt the cashier gives them show the amount paid in?

    @d123 Starlings tweet.

Rather random comment in a banking thread and ornithologically, they aren't described as a tweeting bird.

They may sing, warble, whistle, chatter and trill, but they don't tweet...

Starlings are relatives of the mynah birds, and like them they have impressive vocal abilities and a gift for mimicry. They can warble, whistle, chatter, make smooth liquid sounds, harsh trills and rattles, and imitate meadowlarks, jays, and hawks.

The songs tend to consist of either loud whistles or softer, jumbled warbling. Whistled songs are a few seconds long, often used between males. Warbled songs can go on for more than a minute, and seem mainly directed at females.

Males sing several varieties of each of these two classes of songs. Females also sing, particularly in the fall. Songs often include imitations of other birds, including Eastern Wood-Pewee, Killdeer, meadowlarks, Northern Bobwhite, Brown-headed Cowbird, Northern Flicker, and others.

The OP isn't their customer and they don't appear to have said that you can deposit without a pre-printed slip/debit card.

What is the OPs expected outcome here as it's ultimately a business decision for RBS.

    Anonymous donations could be dodgy.

Third party cash payment by a non-customer. Pretty sound reason for rejecting it.

Easily resolved by getting a paying in book if it's a regular payment or using your own bank to do a bank transfer (or you own online banking if you pay the cash into your own account)

I expect that the OP could have :
Opened an account in their own name at the branch
    Deposited the amount + £1
    Transferred the amount, as necessary
Closed the account and recovered the £1

Maybe not in a hour, but pretty quickly.

Order a paying-in book and send it to your sister if she regularly credits your account?

No it isn't! It's completely mundane and commonplace. Tenant paying into a landlord's account, spouse topping up their partner's balance, a relative giving a cash gift to a child, employee paying business proceeds into the employer's account, two friends settling a bar tab... this happens every day. Or have I been living in some kind of alternate universe?

At any rate, what about using the instant deposit machines, presumably they wouldn't require a deposit slip?

If that's honestly Natwest's position (and I don't recall it being policy when I banked with them between 2001-2015) then perhaps you should consider changing banks.
