Caravan floors done and carpets back in place, seating put back in and bedding under the seats, tyres on and outside cleaned, so yesterday was a busy day.

Have been cooking today as I am long shift tomorrow and find it helps if I am slightly organised. Will have to work out the cost of everything but have noticed part of our problem is our portion size, we like food, thats the long and short of it, we enjoy eating, and yesterday we had a meal that was meant to feed 6 and we will be lucky if it does 4 meals, it actually would have done 2 meals however whilst eating i pointed out to Mr El that it was meant to feed 6 so we stopped and saved some, Mr El later on ate more as he was still hungry,

Today i cooked some more and measured 125g of mince per portion and it was tiny ( I imagine though 125g is an average portion size) , I then put out a portion of the size we usually eat it was 300g, so this tells me that we have a portion issue, doing this other thread has been good in the sense it will make me notice these things and deal with them.

Phoned the HMRC today, I had recently received my tax statement for next year which stated I had underpaid tax so they were reducing my tax banding to reflect the money I owe, so spent a wee 20 mins on the phone to them, its frustrating not talking to a human, i spent most of my time trying not to sound Scottish so that I atleast stood a chance of being understood

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Avp9aUkM5g0 this was my pain

eventually I got put through to a lovely person from Liverpool and we understood each other perfectly, it appears that for some reason the local council decided I worked for them and earned a wage, but that that wage was £0 but didnt feel they needed to send a p60 either to me or to the tax office stating the same. Either way it is sorted now and I will pay the right tax, so a wee word of warning, make sure you check your tax return.

Anyway better go and sort out the eating

Unfortunately the recommended maximum portion for red meat is 100g. I was always amused that the size was described as being that of 'a pack of playing cards', totally up-to-date reference ;)

Don't get me wrong, sharing a nice small steak (we got a lovely fillet steak with 75% off last week) can be a treat, but we also tend to eat far more than that. Then again, we're both overweight! :o

yeah we are both overweight as well ... having 300g of mince per portion is no doubt a large part of that

100g just isnt enough, heck I found 125g far too small

how do people manage on 100g ?

Stuffed if I know El - the only way I've been able to lose any weight is a bit of calorie restriction with strenuous exercise - I find it difficult to attain sustainable results.

thats kinda the same as me ed, I work hard at it and rarely get anywhere ... cutting out certain foods and excercising is what we are told is the way to go ... however it doesnt stop me from feeling hungry but I now see that 100g of meat is just not going to work, even though it is the amount that is recommended, so what are my choices? what do we do so we can maintain a healthy weight apart from run a marathon ever day

and with the society we seem to be living in it is starting to appear that fat shaming appears is acceptable... obesity is the new buzz word

ach its a quandry which wont be solved over night... but we keep battling on

Well, 'shamings' aside, we do need to take some personal responsibility for our actions (and weight).

Granted, times have changed in terms of what we eat, when we eat it and when we spend our days, but it's hardly a surprise?

In our house, we tend to eat too much/unhealthy stuff for the usual reasons - we like it, or we don't have time. Lack of self-control is one thing, but there are so many demands on everyone's time these days that we're literally choosing money over our health.

I agree we have to have that personal responsibility as well, we cant all sit around going not my fault. Time is such a scarce commodity, how often do we spend our time chasing money only to allow our health to suffer? I know I do, and we need money to get what we want in life, we also need time, I spend a large portion of my time either working or caring for people, however, this doesnt leave me much time to grow my own veg or shop healthily, or cook etc. So what do I do? do I stop working then have loads of time, however no money to buy the things that will help me look after my health better. Or do I stop the caring duties so that I can have time to look after my health? leaving family members that are really not well alone?

I have already cancelled going to my Pilates class, I paid for it in advance but just dont have the energy, now Pilates is not hard excercise, but it is excercise that would benefit my health, but after working 10 hours and then heading to aunties to deal with what needs done there I just dont have the energy for that 1 hour per week for me.

We are living in a fast paced society, I dont for one second think I am alone in experiencing these things, we all have pressures of some sort on us, and we eat fast, we eat for conveniance and in many cases we eat too much and certainly dont excercise enough.

sheesh this challenge is turning out to be a deeper process than first thought, but maybe this is a process that will make a huge change in my life, so I am gonna stick with it for now

thanks for the input Ed as always get me thinking xxx

I think that (as with all things), we need to strike a balance.

Like you, I enjoy the privilege of being able to care for other people, but I also get to enjoy the pain of having no blimmin' free time! I'm hardly one to talk, but I'm exploring the following to try and get some of my life back:
    • caring - see whether I can share caring responsibilities with like-minded individuals. For example, if we can babysit DD and one of her wee pals, her pal's parents can do it next time. We don't all have family we can lean on, so sometimes sharing might be with the state/homecare providers etc.
    • Caring - synchronise 'caring' (or family 'obligations' like visiting) so that they take less time. For example, Dad is babysitting nieces and needed to visit us, have him bring the nieces so we catch up with him and DD gets distracted at the same time.
    • Dietary - consider why we're aiming to eat a certain way and explore the things that matter most to us as a family. Explore whether the more expensive choices are the most expensive ones. If not, ditch them and focus on what is important (so mebbe keep the organic veg and eggs, but ditch the £5/day supplements, that sort of thing)
    • Dietary - accept that I am not a factory! I can't make bread, cheese, yoghurt, roast my own coffee and grow my own veg. Focus on the ones that I can cope with - bread and yoghurt can make themselves in the background, I don't have time to tend a vegetable garden
    • Monetary - be ok with having less. Be open to the fact that lifestyle (and dietary choices) have a real cost and that I can't afford to do them all. For example, by accepting I can't grow veg, could I still meet my values by buying an organic veg box? etc. etc. This one I struggle with the most, life is expensive!

Right, enough aspirational middle class !!!!! from me ;)
