They will know the time the postbox was actually collected
Is this true and if so how do they do it?

Just because a post box says that the last collection time is 9am - it doesn't actually mean it will be collected then - it could be much later.

Doesn't it mean "this is the last time at which collection that day is guaranteed"?   There could be additional earlier collections (if last is 5pm)  or there could be later (if there are issues)

The postie logs the actual time they clear the box?
I need to think of something new here...

HJ, will you post on the stated day even if you've missed the collection for that day?

The two boxes most convenient for me now only have one collection and it's at 9am, so any afternoon posting won't get picked up on the day of posting.

There are a couple more boxes I could use but they are both a short drive away, they have 4.15pm & 5pm collection. I could use those but I wondered what other folk do.

Also, I received a test item with a spelling mistake in my address and the postal town had been left off the envelope. The house number and postcode was correct so I recorded it as correctly addressed. Did I do the right thing? Just wondering how accurate Kantar want this to be.
When I received an item which had an error in the handwritten address (I don't recall now exactly what it was), I did tick the box to say the address was incorrect.  At that time at least, there was no follow up question to establish what the error was.  So I emailed TNS to ask if they wanted to know and the answer was that they didn't but they would report to RM that there had been some issue with the address.  I hope they did as, by my reckoning from the postmark date and date of delivery, the error had created a delay in transit.

There is a barcode inside the door. They scan it with a handheld machine.

When the box at the top of my street went over to 9am collection I asked the postman how accurate 9am was. He replied that it is more often than not 10am when it gets collected.

He then added that I shouldn't rely on it being emptied at 10am and to be on the safe side I should post before 9am unless I was happy for my letter to get collected the following day.

It's what I would call a little-used box. I've no idea about other boxes though.

That makes sense. In my last job we had a barcode stuck to the wall that posties making collections used to scan.

The boxes marked as 9AM collection are collected by your postman/woman during their delivery round rather than sending out an additional vehicle to collect them all in the evening as they used to do. They are done at whatever time of day they are passing, they just aren't allowed to do them before 9AM. I regularly see the one on my road getting emptied at about 3PM as the postie is walking back to their van after finishing deliveries on my road.

I wish my nearest box was emptied in the afternoon, it'd be very handy for my eBay stuff.

You would think so, but no.

There are lots of post boxes here where the last collection is listed at 17:30 which I frequently see emptied 20 minutes or so early..
