Haven't had Kohlrabi in years! Mum used to love it in spring and picked it when it was quite small. Cubed, steamed and then served in a Hollandaise-type sauce, which I can't remember how to make. :(

I tried moving the Florentines when they were warm (with a pallet knife), but had more luck cold. I wander whether the centres weren't cooked enough. Maybe have the oven a bit cooler and leave them in longer.
  • Busy bakers here - mince pies, florentines, almond biscotti and chocolate cake. We added more almonds to the Florentine mix until it was saturated and had more success this time. OH cleared the Snug and polished the table for me so it looks lovely in there which really helped.

It seems odd to not be in a flappy panic at this stage on Christmas Eve, but instead I am sat with a cup of tea making vague plans for tomorrows cooking. The turkey is happily in its brine, and everything that needs defrosting overnight is sorted. Everything is wrapped ready, I even remembered the two boxes hidden in the garage. The only minor challenge is that I can't quite remember which pile of presents belongs to which boy :o

I didn't venture out of the village but have heard that the bargains were worth the effort. Oh well, the freezer is fairly full and I will need room to add DS1s turkey/gravy ration for the next few months too.

    :xmassmile Merry Christmas everyone

  • Thanks for the Christmas wishes, hope everybody had a lovely day. The food came together nicely here and a pleasant time was had by all.

Leftovers day when I usually read my new books and refuse to cook only somebody appears to have eaten all of the interesting bits last night so will need to bulk it out. Also no new books!

Pack of sausages out of the freezer, will make sausage rolls later as I have puff pastry in the fridge. Leftover breadcrumbs so I can make cheese and onion ones too which I prefer. I use the filing from this delia recipe but buy pre rolled puff pastry: http://https://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/occasions/easter/easter-recipes-for-the-long-holiday/vegetarian-sausage-rolls

    Sausage rolls:
Skin the sausages, lay two on the first edge of the pre-rolled puff pastry, roll the pastry round them, press to seal, cut to inch lengths and then give them 20 minutes or so in the oven. Much nicer than shop bought if you serve them hot, nicer still if you use good sausages.

I've just remembered a favourite snack too - dried apricots stuffed with soft blue cheese. Yum.

I'm busy resisting sale buys. I don't need anything, and an  emergency dentist bill for OH means I really really shouldn't buy things we don't actually need, no matter how much of a 'bargain' it is. I could have gone and had a look this morning but then if you look you find things don't you? Far better to just not go in the first place.

You could do my online sale shopping if you like? I have a HUGE list...
  • Yes but greenbee if I look I will see things that I want too. The trick is not to look. It helps that I unsubscribed from a lot of emails so I don't get sucked in as much.

I had to go to the co-op in the end and picked up a few 75% off bits - mushrooms, cream, veg Plus the bread I actually went for. Ending up recreating Christmas dinner for the boy who was rather peeved that OH and SS had pigged through pretty much everything in the evening, so the sausages got used for more pigs in blankets rather than sausage rolls in the end. He was very grateful (who's a good mummy then) and filled his hollow legs quite happily.

Last of that pack of bacon got used on cooked breakfast, complete with poached eggs and reduced mushrooms. Need to look at what we have in and make a vague plan.

My aim is to not go to a proper stupid market till OH is back at work and I had stocked up on household stuff etc for this reason. Bread, milk and veg available from the village co-op and I am less likely to be sucked in to buying stuff we don't need. Although they had half priced the Christmas sweets -quite early for them as they normally wait for a good week afterwards. Mince pies 50p, big celebrations pouches at £2, and the boxed jelly babies/wine gums/all sorts down to £1 in ours so worth a look if you want some reduced treats but don't want to go to a big shop.

Woke up to a pretty blanket of snow again, and it's been snowing gently on and off ever since. Hope to get out for a walk in a bit but need to avoid getting wet and really cold if I can. Im only just getting over the last lurgy without adding a new set of aches.
