In 20 years most cars will be driveless so you will not own a car at all, think Uber for driveless, you want to go out tap the "app" few minutes car arrives and off you go, when you come back it drives off.
Imagine the congestion on the industrial estate I work on as everyone leaves at 5pm for the day - 600 uber cars all trying to get into (and out) of the estate in a 10 minute period! Wonder what all 600 will do once the evening rush hour is over....0 -
Do they actually mean "BANNED" or just "NO LONGER PRODUCED" ?
If IC cars are to be banned from a specific date (eg 01/01/2040) - at what point will the value of cars become insignificant ?
I mean - who will buy a new IC car from, say 2030 - knowing that it's second hand / third hand etc value will be tiny ?
And no sales will occur in the last 2 or 3 years to speak of at all - what will the car industry do to counteract this loss - at the same time as having to still support the ever diminishing number of IC cars still on the road ?
Except for collectors of Ferraris etc - who will buy a new car - in the last 10 years of production ?0 -

This puts a totally different perspective on my latest concern ...
In the last few years - certain IC car values will rocket as people try to get a car that will "see them out"
Reliable cars (such as the future classic Google Amazonia) will be a good investment - and will be hung on to by those who can afford to buy petrol (and diesel) - probably on the black market at silly prices ..0 -

When would you ever be stuck behind someone for 6 hours at 40mph? Get real.0 -
The debate about driverless cars is very interesting. It will happen, but when it does it'll mean the end of manual driving almost instantly, the 2 simply cannot co-exist safely.Pants0

Gone will be the days of just getting into the car and driving for the sake of driving - the only jourmeys that will be allowed, under the new regime will be official journeys where there is no alternative (such as via web based conference calls) and even then, we will need clearance at the highest level !!
You think that this is far fetched ?0 -

ROSPA recommends a 15 minute break every 2 hours to limit fatigue and improve driving safety. That's only 140 miles at motorway speeds. So even at the best case you're well within the guidelines.0 -
Sometimes you read something and think can they really be that stupid??? This is one of those times.
Putting aside all the practicality/infrastructure/energy supply/charging issues the biggest problem imo is going to be the supply of materials for the permanent magnets EVs need.
The rare earth minerals needed to produce the magnets are, as the name suggests, rare and therefore finite. Not only that but extracting them from the Earth is incredibly destructive to the environment. If we're talking about the whole of the UK going electric plus a few other European countries then you're talking just decades before the supply is exhausted and that's only if China, who control 90+% of the market decided to export them to. Currently there's very strict controls on the export of them and AFAIK China expects to use most of its supply for itself.
Not heard anyone, governments or manufacturers, mention how they plan to address that particular issue but hey ho I'm sure by 2040 we'll be a one nation Earth sharing our resources evenly for the greater good. :rotfl:0
