BBC Top Story. Diesel & Petrol cars banned from 2040

And MY point is give the manufacturers chance. All tech starts somewhere. Just look at mobile phones.
However you can bury your heads in the Sandra's much as you like. Electric and hybrid cars are coming. They will get better. There will be classics. There will be bog standard run arounds.
I find it laughable how hostile people are to a mode of transit that is significantly cheaper than their present one. Or hostile to making that cheaper transport even better.
In the meantime I'm going to continue driving my practically free car, waving while people spend hundreds of pounds a month to burn it :-).
Your enthusiasm is endearing.
Enjoy the 'cheap' motoring while it lasts. If and when the obligatory EVs come into force, the government will get their pound of flesh. Philip Hammond said as much yesterday.
There are two things certain in life:
Death and Taxes...0 -
That's precisely what I got an ev now I wanted to actually make use of cheap motoring before they crank taxes up!
But there is no anecdote in reference to the comment.
Been through it all ... Sorry you had a bad experience. Again, the tech will have to improve and in time there will be more choice. In my experience the Nissan leaf 30kw is reliable.
You can have bad experiences with anything.
If we are mentioning anecdotes I had no end of problems with a mini Cooper D. I had it 2 years and it was in and out of the garage all the time. The power would always drop off when pulling away. In the end I cut my losses and bailed. I don't assume every single diesel will be the same.
You are a right bunch of Downers. I make some positive posts abusing and trolling no one and I get whinging back. Have a drink. Lighten up. The week is almost over!0 -
Oh and Jack. I love American muscle cars. Whenever I go over I hire mustang and camaros. I blasted a classic mustang around Goodwood. I love the sound and feel of a powerful car engine. But I ain't going to be running one on my daily commute!0

You just wait until it becomes mass market (assuming it does). It will not be any cheaper than our petrol cars of today. The government will need to recoup all the lost fuel duty, and the only way will be similar levels of taxation on electric cars.0 -
The plan is to ban sales of conventional petrol and diesel cars in 2040, the sale of hybrid versions will continue - I guess by then, if fully electric cars are not viable for the longer journeys that many people have to do, they will be even more suited to city centre journeys - using the conventional power plant for longer journeys outwith the city.0

I can't tell if you're joking.
EV's are real cars. I'm sure people complained just as much when leaded fuel was phased out, or we stopped using horses, or we started using diesel, or introduced automatic transmissions?
By the 2040's EV's will be so far in advance of IC cars (if they even exist) that people will wonder why we held onto them for so long. For instance: you can use inductive charging to charge an EV wirelessly in a car park or even on a road. You'll never be able to refuel an IC vehicle whilst it's driving, or refuel it from a car park.
I don't even know where to start on Sharia law. What's that got to do with anything?0 -
And what about that glorious sound? The leccy car is going to sound of the whistle of the electronics.
You can fit a simple sound card that makes it sound like it has a proper engine, through the 4 channel 18 speaker sound system.
I have one in my model railway engine. It even does the coldstart when cylinders start cutting in, then the blower starts spooling up.
Then it is speed related from that point.
I suppose you could select engine from supercharged V8,
Honda RA272E (14,000 rpm V12- imagine that)Boxer 6 or 4 etc.
Then all you have to do is close your eyes when driving (don't worry, most of the cars I encounter seem to be driven by people with their eyes closed) and you could be in a Proper CarI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

Why does a car have to be powered by dead dinosaur juice to be "real"?
Try a ride in a Tesla and then say its not "a real car" once you've got your breath back.
You've misread it anyway, ICE cars wont be banned just sales of new ones. But thats academic as no one in their right mind would want to buy one by then anyway as they will be far more expensive to buy and costlier to run, than electric.
( And if you are so shallow as to need a loud vroom vroom noise (didnt you grow out of that once you were 8 or so?) , put the appropriate sound effect on your 8-track and turn the volume up. )0 -

I have owned an EV. It was so terrifically unreliable that it was returned after 12 months, almost eight of which it spent "under repair".
I'd have another EV, but using one I learnt about the disadvantages very quickly, and they're not that suitable for much of the driving I do except my short commutes to work which don't happen every day anyway.
However, I won't for one second be kidding myself that another EV will be exciting.
I see your point, its well known that petrol and diesel cars never have issues, that there are no "lemons' that constantly break down and have to be rejected as a point of law after being in and out of the garage for months. Never happened. Though if it has can i assume you'll be just as critical of ICE cars?0
