And Edinburgh rock. And Berwick Cockles. Just cullen skink is FISH and I don't do fish _pale_
For me Fuds, the islands are incredibly sad because of the people who were pulled off them and shipped to Canada like cattle. The songs would break your heart lol still after 200 years.0 -

Good grief, I didn't know about that! Was that done to populate the colonies?0 -

Ah, I had heard of the Clearances but I hadn't realised people had been sent overseas - I'd thought they went to live in the towns and cities
I was at school in Scotland for a couple of years in the 60s, and remember learning (or at any rate, being taught!) about the Reivers, and the Covenanters, and Jenny Geddes throwing a stool in St Giles' Cathedral; I can't now remember who she threw it at (maybe the leader of the Church of Scotland) but I think it was to do with the introduction of the new Prayer Book. I was only there a year before we had to choose our options for O grades, and I had to choose between History or Geography, so I chose geog., knowing that if I moved to a school in England before the exams, knowing Scottish history wouldn't be much help!
My best friend tells me that Scottish history isn't really taught any more, which is a terrible shame.0 -
I remember that when my friend moved to Scotland she became very exercised about the injustices visited upon the population by the evil English land owners. Comments about how the Scottish land owners weren't entirely blameless were ignored or brushed aside.
She is still very partisan about her adopted country, even to the extent of complaining bitterly at the BBC weather forecasts. "Will you look at that! All about England, nothing about Scotland at all." Useless to say that in fact there had been quite a bit about the weather in Scotland, she just won't have it.
I love Scotland. I love the countryside, the people, the history and the customs, but I am English through and through. In fact if you turned me upside down I've probably got MADE IN ENGLAND stamped on my bottom.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Don't worry about what I'm doing. Worry about why you are worrying about what Im doing.I believe that friends are quiet angels
Who lift us to our feet when our wings
Have trouble remembering how to fly.0 -
The thing is though I'm English and I see no difference in the English or Scottish. Maybe it's being close to the border and growing up in mining villages that blurs the lines.
I have never been to Wales, want to go though, but I expect I might well feel similar to those as well given the struggles of yesteryear. I dunno. I have rose tinteds on' alf the time but I think that's a respect thing for what all older generations have been through, and you too Monna, you English woman you! :Dx0
