  • They have made the cherry tree into a rounded shape over the years FPK, it's as tall as the top windows of the house though, I guess if you owned your tree you could prune it into a shape that would let you cover it and perhaps this one is on a different root stock and is what they call a 'bush tree'. If your trees are old then they probably are from before different rootstocks to limit tree height were in use?

Fuddle somebody up there sent that saying and that clematis so that you'd think about your mum ;)
You do not want to know what kind of sayings my mum used to me

Mrs LW, you're probably right. The house is 1930s and I wouldn't be surprised if the trees weren't from around then. I've been reading up on fruit trees and root stocks in preparation for my own. We'll see what sort of space we have. maybe we'll have small trees, or maybe a row of step-overs, who knows!

Fuddle that clematis is bound to thrive and it will remind you that you've taken water logged roots that your mother tried to care for, but perhaps never quite knew what they needed, and you've made them thrive. I'm glad you've found some peace.

This bloody laptop is flashing pink at me and I can hardly see to type. It's only just out of warranty, is the most expensive computer I've ever bought - £850 - and I'm seriously not happy.

Oh Mar - I hope it's just an alert or sumfin!
Monna - when I finally get to meet you in the Pilot I do hope you won't be dressed to impress - cos I'll be in scruffy loafers, cut off jeans ( if the weather's fine) and a t-shirt!
Fuddle - replant that clematis a bit deeper than it was originally and give it a feed ( tomato feed is good) and it should send up some new shoots. With a bit of tlc you should get a result. I have a beautiful Azalea that was my mum's - it's a reminder of her and how she loved her garden.
FPK - our house is early 30's and there's a plum tree in the garden that I think has been there before our house was built! We've been here over 40 years and it crops well every year. I looked it up and apparently it's a Mirabelle or Myrobalan which were/are used for rootstocks. Lovely small round red plums - make super jam too! I'm very fond of it and feel I have a duty to care for it - bit daft i know.
Well, it's my birthday today - catching Monna up! Not doing anything special other than going to the club, DH is driving so I can have a drink and a friend is making me a cake - I've asked for lemon drizzle cos I'm not keen on too sweet cakes! I'll also be getting rid of my surplus climbing beans to a couple of friends.
Huge lightning show here last night and more forecast for today.
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle
  • Happy Birthday SILVASAVA have a lovely day xxx.

I'm making rhubarb and ginger jam today as we have much rhubarb on the lottie and I've used a piece of fresh ginger to flavour it. We've been running down our stocks in the store room and have only a small amount of jam left so I thought I'd make some now to take with us to our new home when we get there.

Fuds I think maybe your mum got confused somewhere. The phrase that I've always used is very similar and it's "The wreck of the Hesperides" when I'm describing something messy - usually my house after a visit from the HT's friends. The Hesperides is an actual shipwreck and would make a lot more sense in that context.

Thanks to Fuds, I'm in on the dark side!!
Somebody was talking about magpies making a racket in the garden. Last year, about this time, I would wake early (think 5'ish:eek:) to what sounded like somebody hammering nails into wood. This would go on for about half an hour and then stop. Every morning for about a month, it continued.
One morning, unable to stand the noise any longer, I got up and made a cuppa and wandered through to the front room where the noise was louder. I looked outside and saw a huge black crow 'pecking' at my black car.
I was intrigued by this point and called upon the services of Monsieur Google.
Apparently, this time of the year is mating season. The crow could see it's reflection in my car and, thinking it was a rival, was pecking at it to make it go away.

    Happy birthday Silva.

Mrs LW - I had rhubarb gin last night. Was disappointingly un-rhubarb-y (yes, that is a word.... cos I said so :p)

Not sure what to do today - seem to have escaped the storms but it is VERY windy and not sure whether it will rain or not. Sometimes the rain goes straight over us onto the mountains behind....

Anyway before all that I have to marinade chicken for fajitas later and make a crumble..
I wanna be in the room where it happens
