burtha Hope the day goes well . A run sounds just the thing to clear your head and start the weekend .
Crossing my fingers the weather stays good and your youngest can enjoy the break .

There but for fortune go you and I.0 -
Burtha glad you liked the Javelin idea, just say the word and I shall be there, as soon as my little legs will carry me :rotfl:. ( A Javelin through the foot is not very pleasant, or other parts of the anatomy
)

Mar I used to live in Aberystwyth and would do similar in the Welsh National library. A readers ticket was a real treat!
Nanny, it depends on how posh and exactly how far into the Edwardian era. Mrs Beeton (in the Victorian era) recommended this for 40 people:
A joint of cold roast beef, a joint of cold boiled beef, two ribs of lamb, two shoulders of lamb, four roast fowls, two roast ducks, a ham, a tongue, two veal-and-ham pies, two pigeon pies, six medium-sized lobsters, one piece of collared calf's head, then salads, biscuits, bread and cheese, and 122 bottles of drink - plus champagne.
The Edwardians did things a bit more daintily and had things like egg and cress sandwiches, pies, cold chicken, and some really bizarre sandwich/salad concoctions like olive and anchovy sandwiches. They also loved a good mold--aspic, jelly etc. although I'm sure only the most ambitious would have attempted that!
I'd probably do cold roast chicken, cold roast beef, condiments, bread and butter, variations of potato salads, radishes with salt and butter, variations of vegetable salads--carrot, coleslaw, spinach, waldorf, cold pies, quiches/tarts, cheeses, chutneys, pickles, strawberries and cream (probably Chantilly because WHY NOT?), finger sandwiches (cucumber, egg and cress and something weird), cakes--seed cake, victoria sponge, battenburg, sausage rolls, scotch eggs, ginger beer, lemonade (cloudy) champagne, , coffee, tea and maybe some brandy or scotch for after.
Even my eyes think that is probably too big for my stomach but as Mar says--those who could afford to eat did things properly!0 -
FPK many thanks for your mouth watering menu :T. Count me in, even if it is in dreamland :rotfl:.

Don't know about anyone else but I'm with Mrs Beeton -. must have been the champagne that did it for me.............:whistle:Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

Don't worry Silva, there will DEFINITELY be champagne. How could there not????0
-
As for the rest of her menu, I wish she gave more detail about the bits and pieces, I mean a joint is a joint, but what are these salads??? I also have no idea what a collard calf's head is but it doesn't sound appetizing!0

FPK if you Google Mrs Beeton's Collared Calf's Head the recipe comes up."When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us" Alexander Graham Bell0

Think I will stay with the dainty sandwich , not the calf's head thanks :eek:
