Lyn, lettuce ice lollies. I like it. You may have started a whole new trend.

Good luck with the breamaker Mar. I used to have one and it was lovely to come downstairs in the morning to the smell of freshly baked bread. However, I was offended by the hole left in the middle of the loaf by the paddle.
So now it's back to the old fashioned way. I don't do any vigorous kneading though, I do the stretching and folding method which suits my lazy nature.

Today I'm going to my favourite old ladies meeting and after that planning the wake I am organising for one of the aforesaid old ladies, whose funeral is on Friday next week.
Before all that I'm having lunch with a couple of friends.

It's all go, this life of retirement.

I felt just the same. And then was further offended when the paddle malfunctioned and got stuck in the bread instead. Haven't had a breadmaker for years now.

Maybe it'd be worth filling the hole with summat.... butter? Jam? pate? more bread? :D

  • Is anyone else missing the 'pop up' box on the screen notifying a new personal message in your inbox? I don't seem to be getting that but have to spot a new message from the numbers on my tool bar at the top of the screen. Is it just us? or has the box gone missing from anyone else?

I also used to have a breadmaker and was vaguely offended by the paddle hole.. I now make sourdough and also use stretch and fold - so easy.. (or if sourdough comes up especially moist I use the "stir and pour in" method - doesn't seem to make much difference. The thing has a life of its own anyway..

Off to London for a mixture of work and pleasure. DD are off to the theatre separately tonight (she to Hamilton and me to something else not yet booked. Leicester sq is our first stop). I have splashed out on a hotel for tonight as we are going to the Harry Potter play tomorrow afternoon. I have a PhD supervision today whilst DD is meeting friends and then I am meeting my older brother tomorrow after HP for beers and probate issues and DD is going home on an earlier train.

All go here too, Monna, I thought students never did anything :p

breadmaker books. I ordered specially because my bm is 1lb and the recipes with my japanese bm are limited. I paid full price for the first book and the others were all second hand and all from amazon.

I have used them over and over and am getting fantastic results. Btw the hole at the bottom of my zojirushi is small and the paddle always comes clean out but I treat the pan and paddle with kid gloves, only ever soaking and wiping with a soft cloth and poking the paddle hole with a gentle poking brush

brilliant breadmaking in your bread machine Catherine Atkinson
bread machine magic by Linda Rehberg
more bread machine magic by Linda Rehberg
The bread machine magic book of helpful hints by Linda Rehberg

All the above have recipes for small (1 lb), medium and large loaves and I saw recommendations for the magic books on various blogs. If using a bm then it is important to use accurate measurements ie loosely fill cups, spoon the flour into a cup and level with a knife. Don`t warm water past room temperature. Some recipes use butter in cups, you can find the equivalent gram weight online. I did that and made a list, which I keep with bm instructions.

I always peer into the viewing lid, keeping it closed and if I see flour on the sides/corners then I scrape down with a spatula and I always touch the dough while kneading, not sticky and not dry, add water or flour as needed

Thank you Mrsmac. :) I've aged now though ;)

Does anyone know if breadmakers save on electricity uses? We don't use much bread now I don't eat the stuff (I must have been consuming a lot :( ) but when I do make it I really begrudge having the oven on and don't want to cook anything else incase it taints the taste of the loaf. Just pondering. I'm too tight to buy a machine and while.my wrists work and I'm a housewife I have no excuse but to hand make it.

I've spoken to the new head. She was lovely. Reading between the lines the head didn't put up much of a fight because I think she wants to bolster her numbers. It's a heavily under subscribed school in a rural location. any other year group and youngest would have walked in without a problem. Anyway all sorted. We go for a visit in the morning then I do the paperwork and DD goes to her new class. She went to old school very excited this morning. Don't forget (hides) this is the 6th school move and my kiddlers are used to it now, they see it is fun and exciting meeting new people and getting to be in different surroundings with different people. She's hoping she might get to know children where she lives now and I'm hoping to get to know some younger mums here. The allotment contingent are canny but I could do with talking to my own age too. We'll see.

I have to say I'm shattered though. I had 9 hours last night and still it's not been enough. I have a house like a tip so I have to make a move. Roll on bed time!
