Payment in kind is real oldstyle if you think about it monna. When my dad retrained as a chef he worked long days including a long commute by bus and either train or ferry across the Mersey. odd jobs around the house would often be done by a neighbour. Mum would cook or bake something, maybe do some ironing or knit etc in exchange. She loathed sewing so that never happened. One abiding memory is she would never sit down to eat our main meal if she knew any of the neighbours were struggling to provide a meal. On would go the coat and outdoor shoes and off she'd go clutching a saucepan covered with a clean tea towel. She was tiny, under 5 ft but for all our disagreements she was mighty.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

Stay where you are ming. We may need to take refuge with you if things get worse (I'm 5/8 Irish and a 1/4 Scots if that helps - not Irish enough to get a passport, but Irish enough for some idiot to suggest throwing me out the day after the general election, along with the population of Liverpool). My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage11

As a child I remember my mum walking us around the Georgian quarter in Liverpool a lovely area. getting closer to the Toxteth area she pointed out the signs in windows of lodging houses. No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish. That was my first introduction to hatred. They were slummy, rundown properties but harboured such hatred. I campaigned for allsorts over the years, always peacefully. However it was no surprise when Toxteth erupted in riots, not something I'd condone but not surprising.Watching the Falkener St series of "A House through Time" a few years ago telling the history of the beautiful house on the edge of the Georgian quarter and all who had lived there was riveting. I knew about the cotton industry built on slavery. The Falkner St house was built for a cotton merchant complicit in slavery.I've watched it each time it's been repeated but wish it was available on DVD. All the beautiful buildings in the city were built because of the misery of others and the wealth created by King Cotton. It was finally sort of acknowledged some years ago on Dale St with the slave signs on the outside of buildings however far too little , too late.Myself and the offspring have the 2nd passport. All four of my grandparents were from the Irish Republic. Historical problems are worsening more than ever since Brexit so I wont be heading there. As for seeking sanctuary with the Ming have you lost your mind woman? Remember the poor heffalumps, never seen again walkers, little fluffy chicks etc. We'd be better off seeking a forgotten Bothy and forming a commune- No Mings Allowed!polly. It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

I was referring to mothernerds suggestion we may need to seek sanctuary with you Mar. Apart from the fact we wouldn't all fit into your wee hoose,we'd be afraid to accept a home baked cake, biscuit or try one of your special hand made sweeties. I'm not in any way against anyone but I draw the line when it comes to possible poisoning or being invited to view your freezer from the inside! That's even before we start on chainsaws etc.Maybe you should stop reading Wonder Collies posts on the preppers thread. She's not in to toxic potions but you don't seem to understand chainsaws , guns etc are part of her families working life in Canada and not for a wee wummin now down the hill.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

MingVase said:I'm a portable vase. A travelling vase. A moveable vase. My public needs me!!How did I miss this? As a genuine Ming Vase you are very fragile and easily broken. One wrong move with your chainsaw or other collectables and we'll be Mingless.pollyx

If I was being nasty, which of course I could never be, I might remind the public that needs Ming that once upon a time we had A portable elephant. A travelling elephant. A moveable elephant. And where is that now?
Answer comes there none.
Anyway, a Ming vase and a chainsaw is an unhappy combination.
I have nothing exciting to tell you. Or even unexciting if I'm honest. Which I am. Except in extreme circumstances.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY (the all-time favourite)
This too shall pass. It might pass like a kidney stone, but it will pass.
I believe that friends are quiet angels
Who lift us to our feet when our wings
Have trouble remembering how to fly.12 -
Well the elephant is still moveable and travelling! It travels through my alimentary...erm. Nevermind.
