It's my understanding, also from people who are not given to lying that this simply isn't true, they are facing these costs because they chose to launch a legal action to fight the fines.

That is perhaps one of the biggest lies doing the rounds. As others have said, the hospital staff did not choose to launch a legal action to "fight the fines". They were taken to court by Indigo for non-payment of dubious invoices. Indigo cannot issue fines. Just like I cannot issue fines against you.

Carwyn Jones disgracefully continued to peddle these untruths in the Welsh Assembly yesterday. If I was Welsh, I would be sending him a strongly worded email.

You don't have to write in Welsh to him.

Strongly worded emails or letters written in English are equally valid

Big difference between telling lies and being mistaken. Bigger than the difference between an enforceable invoice and a fine since Beavis, that's for sure.
  • Turning this on it's head, this is, in effect, income that the hospital could have otherwise had. (Although, of course, I don't condone this type of management.)

Did try and find out how much Macclesfield Hospital "lost" to Parking Eye, but they weren't for telling !

If this is how they commission parking services, it does make you wonder how they commission health.

I don't think the hospital sees a penny of the parking, fees or debt collection. Plenty of hospitals manage to run free parking. Still massively oversubscribed but that's a planning issue (there just aren't enough spaces for the volume of users).

One issue with all hospital staff parking is that because it's necessary to provide a period of handover that when there is a shift change there need to be sufficient parking spaces for staff on both shifts. As an example for nursing staff there will be 30-45 minute overlap between night shift & day shift at either ends of the day.

Another issue with clinical staff working shifts like doctors, nurses, radiographers, laboratory staff etc is that they cannot be late for their shift without inconveniencing their colleagues who are waiting to go home. If these staff arrive for work & there is nowhere to park what are they supposed to do? If administrative staff working in medical records or HR need to spend 5-10 minutes extra to find a parking space & are thus delayed starting work they can always catch up by working 5-10 minutes later but this is not an option for clinical staff working shifts providing 24 hour cover.

Exactly; and the longer it takes them to find a space the earlier they need to turn up, thus making the problem even worse.

I'm sure the problem could be fixed by providing more staff parking spaces.
