  • You say avoid anything on your credit files - surely it!!!8217;s already marked with late payments or arrangements to pay?

To owe that much on a credit building card - somethings amiss here - should you really be thinking about getting another credit card?
  • Depends on how much of a risk etc they think you are.

No one can answer that but then when you apply

Do you think it would make any difference if I called and spoke to them on the phone or do they only allow applications online?
  • They still won!!!8217;t tell you a limit until you!!!8217;re accepted.

Even then you might not find out straight away but a few days letter via letter or email

Did you ever get round to checking how it is reported in your credit files, or is this still all guesswork?

I only went off of the eligibility checker on this site which says to use the checker because officially applying will leave a mark on your credit file. I have, through Barclaycard requested to see mine from Experian so I'll get a better idea of how my credit files stand just now.

To check your files yourself before making any applications you can use
    https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/creditclub for your Experian report
    https://www.clearscore.com/ for your Equifax report
https://www.noddle.co.uk/ for your Call Credit report.

You need to check all 3.

What would they tell me that would give me an indication on whether I would have a good chance of a successful application?

They would tell you how your existing CC is being reported. It would show you (and other lenders) whether it's defaulted, marked as late or marked as an arrangement to pay. This would in turn give youa good indication of the likelihood of being accepted for credit elsewhere.
