I've told my son to leave. I feel awful.

his performance at work really has nothing to do with you, neither does his frivolous spending and debt.
It does when he is sacked and cant afford to pay his way. Spending and debt? It can affect family members credit rating when they want to borrow money.
Coming home late at night a bit drunk is something every 21 year old lad does from time to time, and your children being tardy in paying you back for things is often part of being a parent I'm afraid!

A bit drunk is ok but when they throw up all down the stairs and in their bedroom... Part of being a parent? I dont think so.

Borrowing money? Being slow paying it back? What does that teach them about life?

Stealing? Well as far as i am concerned. Once stolen from, all trust is gone.

What impact would the son's credit files have on the OP's credit files? It's unusual for mothers and sons to have joint financial products.

Dunno if relevant but I do credit checks in my job and when someone mentions a shared house we are instantly disheartened. If numerous ccj are registered at an address it affects everyone living there rightly or wrongly

Not surprising as thats probably considered less secure long term, and in addition it means their living costs are likely lower than they will be in future when moving out of shared housing.

Sharing a house with someone has NO impact on another persons credit file unless you share financial products.
I have defaults and crap credit at the moment due to circumstances and my OH has a perfect records as we've kept bank accounts etc separate.

A CCJ is registered against a person NOT a house

My Sister in Law did a credit check and found my Son popped up on hers.

Different addresses but it must have come through her maiden name because my Son has never lived with her. She had to fill in a form of 'dissociation'. Dunno why, his credit score was better than hers... but thats beside the point.

In the same way, although married, my credit rating (or lack of it) doesnt show up on my husbands.

True but how each individual company assesses potential customers is not necessarily how you think it would work.

The credit file agency doesnt decide if a company accepts or turns you down, they just provide some basic information to the companies, to help them make a decision.
