...the nuances of its usage, except that it's a vague come-back insult.

You could swap it directly with "F off". You can say that to your mates/family etc while laughing round a table and it's just words, but it's the last words you'd use if a drunk in a pub asked you what you're looking at, unless you wanted to end up in a fight.

But, when spoken in aggression with a stranger, it brings in the whole "family honour" thing as you're directly insulting their mum/gran. In short, it makes them a whole lot angrier.....

You're an idiot, is one thing.
Your mother's an idiot, is another level.

Well, the idiocy has to come from somewhere! :rotfl:

Or does idiocy sometimes spontaneously erupt? :D

Is it just as insulting to say your dad's an idiot?
Or to shout 'Your Granpa!' at someone? :rotfl:

    Distant waves from afar!

Just fulfilled a life long ambition to see the penguins in their natural habitat.

WE have a million photos that all don't show very much, I hope you went with a better camera and were there earlier than us (just as it was getting dark).

As you know my parents live there 5 months a year so PM me if you would like me to get some tips on things to do.
    I think....

LOL, I was only really taking the mick ;)

Was it the beach that gets cleared of people just before the birds come ashore for the night?

The main penguin beach is people free, other than pathways constructed over it. The beach next door is full of people that had a few penguins around that possibly swam back to the “wrong” beach. Quite amazing to be so close and in warm sunshine as opposed to the frozen landscapes you see on TV.

I’d forgotten that, and thank you. We do have a full itinerary constructed that leaves little time to spare.

There's not the emotive connection to swearing about your male relatives.

Next time you're driving along (not near a queue and not near where you live) ... if you see a group of knuckle dragging teens shuffling along, just slow down, open your window and shout "Your mum" at them and pause.... see what happens. Repeat for "your dad" as an experiment..... I bet your car gets chased more often for your mum :)

It's always nice to have a nice new "disorder" or "syndrome" to hang your hat on .... and I think I've found one of mine :)

When you have an issue without a name, you can't call it by its name and you can't then think about that and mull it over about what it means.

Well .... I think I've found a new one, only named in 2015... but it "fits". When you have "speshulness" you know you have "problems with certain things" ... a long list of problems with things, but there's no "name" to pin it on to try to understand it's non/functionality.

So, I'll put it down here and then try to explain why I think it's got my name on it.

Problem: Always peeing people off with things I've apparently said that apparently "offended" people, to such an extent that people no longer speak to me. Seen as "challenging" and "a problem", but I won't go into those bits right now.

The term is: Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder.

I think I can see this coming from a couple of directions....

Firstly, I've never understood why people talk about "thinking positively", as, in my view, I am usually trying to portray/see a positive (allbeit pragmatic) viewpoint. It would appear that what I see as "putting a positive spin on things" is the bit that offends.

    So, here's an example.

Just seen a posting for an unused picnic hamper for sale on FB. My FIRST temptation was simply to comment "Buy a quiche. Go out for a picnic. No need to sell it".

And I think .... that's where I've been going wrong in the past.

    :)

Nobody WANTS a chirpy, upbeat, humourous, comment with a kind and thoughtful suggestion do they :)

Well, that's how I see it. It's obviously received in an entirely different way ... because I now believe that if I post that ... I'll end up in a ruck :)

I'd not quite do this ... but if somebody said "My dog died" .... I'd probably just say "Well, on the other hand, it does mean you can go to all those places you always said weren't dog friendly"..... wrong again, eh.

I need to think about this a bit more, I think this syndrome has been the issue all along, so I need to think more about stuff... and maybe ... just always !!!!!! :)

Somebody who didn't know me all that well, once said to me once in a pub discussion, to some random comment of mine,
"Are you trying to be offensive"
    "No" I replied,
"When I am being offensive I can assure you that you will be left in no doubt about it"
(Cue much merriment from the rest of the company)

Sounds like I've got the same disorder though.
Some might call it "Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder"
Some might call it "Telling It Like It Is, :D

But then I don't and won't play the insults and put downs disguised as interest and polite conversation game.
And I cal people out who try it on with me.

There's quite a lot to be said for !!!!!!. :) More realistically, "Don't say something unless you are sure it's the right thing."

One of the participants at lunch on Saturday is autistic. High functioning autistic, who clearly had been taught how to make small talk and seemed to find it a terrible strain. By the end of the meal, he was clearly quite agitated by the effort involved. He's probably incredibly clever and talented, but he spent most of the meal looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
