The neighbours who usually have the biggest fireworks party bought a dog a few months ago, they don't seem to be holding a party this year. The two events may or may not be connected.

I've always wondered if animals that evolved in the arctic ( such as dogs ) wouldn't have any heritable capacity to cope with fireworks due to the lack of lightning and thunder during their evolution.

It certainly scares the life out of them.

Fireworks have never bothered any of the pets we have had...but then they have all grown up in very noisy households with kids banging doors and such like so are probably used to it.

The most reaction I got from Jasper was a slight opening of an eye after a particularly loud bang, he slept through everything else.

Edit - Just in case, I am not in support of everyone being able to let off fireworks, too many idiots around nowadays for that to be a safe option!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

There has been a lot of talk of banning fireworks to the public completely. I’m against this as it’ll push the entire industry underground and encourage stockpiling, which naturally isn’t in anyone’s interest.

I think as long as people are reasonable and let’s neighbours know, there is no problem.

You would think that but someone did just that on one of our local Facebook pages. She warned everyone that she was having a party which included fireworks, the time it was starting and gave plenty of notice....she still ended up with people having a go at her.

Some people, no matter how much notice or how reasonable the other party is in regards to length of display or safety precautions made, will always be unreasonable and unforgiving.

Other people's fireworks don't trouble me. I don't find them enormously exciting, and didn't bother to go and watch any this year, but if other people want to have them, that's fine by me.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Likely the same type of person who moves into my town and complains about the airport, after usually buying due to the really good air links.......

I don't think that too many people are particularly bothered about parties involving fireworks - and that goes for me too.

However, my concern is the yobbos who get hold of them and do stupid things separate from November 5th, Diwali, New year, etc. "for a laugh" - such things as just lighting them and chucking them around, firing rockets across roads, putting fireworks in phone boxes or under cars or, worst of all IMO, lighting a fire then firing fireworks at the fire crew who get called out to extinguish it.

Since it's nigh-on impossible for Old Bill to catch the perpetrators of such behaviour and, therefore, there is no deterrent to deal with them or prevent others from doing likewise, I am of the view that fireworks should not be on sale to the general public but only available for professionally organised displays.

I have just done a lot of research on the fireworks issues and have come up with some quite interesting stuff. For example restrictions have been getting tighter because of the anti-social aspect of the noise created by fireworks. You would not have been able to ignore the fireworks that someone across the road from us detonated on Friday night for about 1 hour. Our house has double and secondary glazing. Our television is in the back part of our living room and the noise from those fireworks drowned out the sound from our television. That is anti-social behaviour. Those fireworks were not the type that should have been detonated in a back garden and yet they were. Not only that but I suspect that the same people did this two nights running. The fireworks came from the same direction and were the same type on both Thursday and Friday night and on both nights they were being detonated between 9pm and 10pm we had no warning from these anti-social people that they were going to do this. I suspect also that those fireworks were category 4 which are illegal unless used by qualified people in a public display. It is also illegal to sell them to members of the public but that doesn't seem to be making any difference.

The guidelines on fireworks state that for safety and anti-social reasons catefory 3 fireworks should not be used in back gardens. Well I can tell you that this has been ignored by many anti-social people in my neighbourhood for getting on for 2 weeks. So the excuse that banning fireworks for sale to members of the public would drive it underground is rubbish. No one is following the rules in my area now.

In my area people are already stockpiling fireworks which are outside the use for confined spaces so how could banning them make this any worse it is already happening.

I am in favour of a complete ban on selling fireworks to members of the public but what I have said in my email to the anti-social department of my local council is that I would be happy with a borough wide ban of the use of category 3 fireworks in back gardens and only the use of category 2 silent fireworks for back garden displays. I can't see how that disadvantages anyone?
