I bet if I popped out after dark and superglued some shiny £1 coins to the middle of the road .... it'd also work. And be something perpetually in place.

Provided you didn't get run over whilst doing it

I think I've finally managed to book a general handyman, comes next week... does all those annoying "odd jobs". So I need to crack on and get everything I need for that work to occur ... bit of paint ... dig out the gate bolts ... new bloody postbox (never found the keys to the old one) ... make a list of jobs....

Well, as soon as you've bought the new postbox, and had it put up, you'll find the keys to the old one.
Are there any letters in it?

I'm still trying to choose a letter box... suffering from indecision and fear of getting one I don't like when it arrives... think I've decided though.

No letters in the old one. I blu-tacked a supermarket carrier bag to the inside and it was a good fit - and once a week I remove the bag and take a photo of inside the box to check.... it's a good job I've not dropped my camera phone in there yet!

I can usually feel/grope/remove any mail that's in there on a day-to-day basis.... they're not the securest of things, which is always a worry if you've got "nosey ferals" floating about. I'll have the new one fitted a bit higher.
If you're moving, though, do you need a new letter box?
The chances are the new owners might want one in the door. Why go to the expense?

Bit late now but why didn't you just get a new lock off eBay?
I thought I linked to one a while back, when i got a new one for mine.(?)
If I didn't then at least the intention was there!

I remember you suggesting a new lock, but that seemed harder for me to achieve/correctly than buying a whole new box ... and I didn't spot a link at all, else I'd remember because I'd have looked... unless I was having a "wonky thinking" day... but I don't recall any link.

EDIT: I did use the forum search to search for such a post - and can only find one where you say "get one from ebay" ... without substantiating it with a link.

Here's your post the Search found me: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=74292059&postcount=5014

Ah I thought I'd put a link, because it was about the time I bought one myself for our postbox.

I had to check for my own sanity ... in case I'd missed something vital :)

I'd have been nervous, in any case, about getting the right one ... as I'd not know and end up getting in a right pickle if I tried to do it myself ... or end up hiring somebody who couldn't complete it as it wasn't the right one. Without a clue ... sometimes you just have to go with "buy new" and not "fix".

I did phone the supplier to see if they could sell me a new key - and they said they've discontinued the boxes as they couldn't get new keys (except for more than the cost of the boxes) and so it was a nuisance when they were asked and couldn't provide.

I had to alter the box slightly. The available locks were a bit bigger diameter, so I had to drill the hole out to 20mm.
Easy if you have a step drill, not so easy otherwise.
I've had three post boxes here.
First one was changed because it was too small.
Second one was changed because, again, it turned out to be too small.
This third one is big enough, and the slot takes books and small parcels, but I had to put magnets in it to hold the lid down, add a seal above the slot to stop the water running down under the lid, and now change the lock because it was crepe.
    Not a cheap box either.

I don't understand why you need to change the box, at all? You are managing fine with your blu tac and carrier bag. Will buyers even notice?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
