Hi CK, didn't realise you are in Georgia. Hope all is ok. I heard what happened in Batumi last week:(.

And in Tbilisi last Tuesday. It’s not nice but it happens, I still felt safer wandering around Tbilisi after an event last night than I do walking around the town I live in sometimes.

I will PM you in a second :)

Sounds ideal, but may also go some way to explaining why it is so hard to save for a mortgage deposit these days.

I missed all the deleted bits.:( Due to being at Tap.

And I'm still a bit confused about the credit card fraud thing.

What precautions should odd bods like me take?

I don't have online banking, and I only use one particular c/card for online purchases, and for nothing else. My other c/card I use for other purchases and take abroad for emergencies (but not used for that to date). However, when abroad, I only use cash or a pre-loaded cash card.
Am a bit worried about the hacking into email accounts. How did that give the fraudsters the mother's maiden name info?

Sorry to be dense, but this is exactly the sort of thing that gives me the heebie-jeebies, because I don't feel in control. :(

The mortgage comment related to the use of a laundry service by recent graduates.

WE do not know how the email account was hacked. The CC company appears to be insecure in that log in can be achieved via info on the card and security over-ridden using a mothers's maiden name which can be found by googling (for example I suspect if you found me on facebook you would find my mum and then her sister who uses her maiden name)....so not too hard.
    I think....

The only other option is that Mr SilverCar has been well and truly busted when trying to secretly buy SC an eternity diamond :)

    .

Oh sorry! I meant to comment on your quote on my previous post, and then got carried away with the c/card stuff and forgot!

And now I'e forgotten what I was going to say about your quote! :rotfl:

Oh yes, it was probably something along those lines. I remember when I was a student, I could barely afford to go to the launderette to do my washing. :( so either the laundry app bulk-buy idea works out really cheap, or else they don't spend money on beer! :D:D

I'd still rather have a Synth, though. You can talk to a Synth, even if all its conversation is about laundry! :D

The joke is I asked on the banking board about the banking app and was reassured that it is secure. It was.

Talking to people it seems that the most likely thing is that in one of the many restaurants and hotels we used the hotel/ cafe wifi to download emails and paid with the credit card. So it isn't beyond the bounds of possibility that the credit card details were memorised and the email hacked and someone put the 2 together.

As for the mother's maiden name research. Our surname is relatively rare. If you googled OH's name you would be able to find his DoB from one of the first few search results. I don't know how much further research you would need to track his mother's maiden name. Maybe the Ancestry sites would reveal all. Possibly armed with a name and address and the name of a credit card is sufficient to open a store account.

The credit company reckon that the email account was hacked and from there they managed to find that there was a branded credit card and somehow they managed to find sufficient details to use it.

The missing link. I have just googled mother-in-law's name. She has very little online presence, no social media. There is one newspaper article that comes up in the first few searches. It is the obituary to her sister that mentions her sister (ie MIL) and then talks of the sister as the daughter of x and y. Giving away the maiden name.

You click on the 'APPEAR' button, (password SESAME), and out pops a muscly bearded guy in gold lamè and a turban who says " Your wish, oh master/mistress?" And then he does your laundry.

Oh, I don't need to rub the phone, then? :D
