In other news, the Aged P has had a fall down some steps outside church this morning, and banged his head. The paramedics were called, and they called me. The paramedics are taking Aged P into hospital to be checked over, but they expect he'll be released this evening. It is a huge relief to me to know that he'll be released not to an empty, cold, split-level and unsuitable house, but to a nice warm flat in a block where there's a care team I've already been able to talk to, and who say they will keep an eye on him if I will let them know when he gets out of hospital. :)

Can you arrange that someone will give him a hand down those steps next week?

The fall occurred when he was trying to give a hand down the steps to another, also aged, chap who was even less steady on his feet than the Aged P is. They ended up falling together, and both getting carted off in the ambulance. The paramedic seemed pretty sure there wasn't anything seriously wrong with either of them, but he sent both of them off to hospital as a precaution, and remarked to me that at least the two of them would have each other for company while they were waiting to be seen.

Last time I saw him was last Thursday. He had spent one night in the flat and compiled a list of things to fetch from the house which we duly collected on Thursday afternoon. By Thursday evening, the very few items that weren't books had been unpacked, and there were just the box after box after box of books needing to be done. I can't help with those - nobody can - he needs to decide for himself what he's going to put where. I phoned him a few days later and he seemed to be meeting people and making friends. He'd been to a residents' meeting, but the hall had been used by an external booking who'd monkeyed about with the sound system, so none of the hearing-impaired residents (most of them, I imagine) had been able to make head or tail of what the meeting was about.

Anyway, he appears to have given the paramedics his new address at the flat - they phoned me to ask for his old address because they couldn't find him in their database with the flat address. That seems promising to me. If he was feeling too confused to remember what medication he's on when the paramedic asked him - and I didn't know so I couldn't tell them - but nevertheless gave his new address when they asked him where he lived, that seems to argue a very promising degree of mental adjustment to the idea that the flat is now his home. :)

ETA I like the phrase "Aged P" to describe him. I forget which NP introduced it to the thread, but I should like to know whether whoever it was had the elder Mr Wemmick from Great Expectations in mind.

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Yes, it was me, and the Dickens reference is where I had remembered it from!

I always felt it had the right combination of affection and respect, whilst conveying the exact situation perfectly! :):A:):A

It is particularly appropriate in this case because he is fond of Dickens, and in GE he particularly likes the character of Wemmick, and especially the scene where he takes Pip with him to his wedding without explaining where they're going. ("Here's Miss Skiffins. Let's have a wedding.")

Waves hello from Iguazu Falls. I can’t load pictures from here, but I’m sure there are loads on google! So tranquil here, only thing to watch out for are monkeys that can open doors!

The phone seems to think I’m in Brazil, but I’m still in Argentina having had an amazing sight seeing experience In Buenos Aires. Exhausted but pleased we did so much.

Sounds interesting! Are you going to Brazil? I've always been fascinated by places like Brasilia and Curitiba!
Decades ago, maybe the 70s or 80s, they used to make 3-D photos that had a textured surface that changed the picture if you changed the angle you looked at it from. Not proper holograms, just an optical illusion that made it look as though it was 3-D. Family travelling abroad sent me a 3-D postcard of some government buildings in Brasilia. Looked like something from the future.

Oh Lydia, poor Aged P! I hope he's all right (not to mention the person he was helping.) It's so good that he has somewhere warm and safe to go home to.
My DD1 is a huge Dickens fan and shares the same birthday :)

silvercar How lovely! Enjoy the rest of your trip :)

DW and I were on the winning team for the Quiz Supper last night. We didn't win it ourselves. That was done by a team member who had been a semi-finalist on MasterMind. She wrote down all the answers whilst the rest of us chatted. :D
