It's murder out there in this wind! The sold sign's even leaning and it's never done that before. There's stuff, bins etc, blowing all over the place. Gusting at 50mph.

Still no response from a sofa man, so I did a charity shop run and popped into a clearance shop to see if they could let me know who does sofa disposal; one old dear in there phoned her son and he quoted £50.

I took a drive round local roads and spotted not only a "clearance" van, but the man beside it, so chatted to him. He said he could do it Tuesday, £30. I said Tuesday's no good and he's coming tomorrow.

Came home and emptied/washed out all the bottles/jars, soy sauce, vinegars, oil, hoi sin sauce, Worcestershire ... washed/rinsed and took those down the tip (of course, as I just typed that I've remembered another jar I'd tipped upside down under a bush to empty and had forgotten about!)

Got back and I had a response from the sofa man I'd messaged 10 hours ago, he wanted £60-70.

I don't think I'll ever want to own a sofa for the rest of my life...
  • PN.... put the sofa outside with a note.... it will disappear by tomorrow!

Hopefully the sofa won't end up fly tipped down a lane :o

Especially if the note reads "Wanted, do not take" :D

Agreed. Just put a price on it. £30, and it will disappear tout de suite.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    I'm using a "proper bloke".
Local, lives over the road, licensed, van sign-written, established waste chappie. All legit.

But, it is harder to get rid of stuff than one thinks... you can see why so many, caught between a rock and a hard place, end up tipping :)

I don't even think I can just take it to my own tip in a hired van as the van'd not have a license to tip. Councils do like to put barriers in people's way, to make some things awkward.

The Council approved service is long-winded/unreliable and they charge £30 for the first item. You need 2-3 weeks' planning/booking time with them.

With our local dump, you can use a hired van. You just have to inform the dump a day in advance, and they issue a permit. It's not very practical trying to shift a sofa on your own, though.

Various waste people wanted upwards of £200 to empty MIL's garage. My son and I hired a van by the hour and did it for £30. Hertz.

The most time consuming part is sorting everything into separate bins at the dump.

If there were more than "just me" many more things would be achievable. :)

Two people can even carry, or 4-skateboard a sofa slowly to a tip up to a mile away. One 5' person, alone, can't.

Agreed. You can't move a sofa on your own, but you can dismantle them, given lots of time and energy. They generally fall to bits if you hammer the joints and unscrew any screws. Your hardwood one sounds very nice, so it's a shame nobody wants it.

You're being super kind to your buyers. Clean and tidy is one thing, but nobody leaves the bins empty!

Unless you are my brother, he has moved several sofas (washing machines, garden sheds - dismantled of course, wardrobes) on his own with a skateboard or two.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

When we last moved, we took their house as part exchange and moved into it for a few months, whilst the house we bought was remodelled.

I left new towels that matched the bathrooms, new soap/toilet rolls/kettle/tea making things... and an immaculate clean house....even the lofts had been scrubbed.

They left maggots in the cooker, mouldy food in the cupboards... it was a nurse and account who we bought the house off.... discussing people!

    It's a whole new world :)

Towels that match bathrooms. I'm still using some I bought 20 years ago. I aspire to a bathroom I like.... towels that matched would be too much to ask for :)
