I must admit that I don't think women should pay more and I do think that women who are in genuinely vulnerable situations should be given priority.

I'm also not stupid enough to think that men and women are equal in every respect. They clearly are not.

I do, however, strongly believe in equal opportunities, regardless of gender.

I don't feel vulnerable, never have. I'm quite happy to go out after dark, as a teenager I would happily get the night service bus at 2 am. I think statistically young men are at more risk of a violent attack than young women, that certainly used to be the case. I remember my gran getting locked in a park one night and getting rescued by a gang of teddy boys, lovely boys she said.

    Reclaim the streets I say.

All I'm sure of is if I break down on the Manchester M60 (think whopping external ringroad without quite so many parking problems as the M25), the coppers were very clear, if you can pull up by an orange phone & call them, they'll call the AA or RAC or whomever for you, pass a message onto whomever's expecting you & even point a camera onto you until you are securely recovered.

Gender blind - they just want you safe til you & vehicle are clear.

Out on the welsh hills, I'd take it as a real kindness if my children & parents are prioritised - this lass will curl up out of the way with a jacket & a good read & thank my lucky stars noone's going to disturb me for a bit.

Would a woman feel vulnerable? Undoubtedly some would - regardless of if they 'should' or not.

Personally, I would be happy to wait a bit longer for a breakdown truck if anyone genuinely very anxious about their safety was being seen first - whether they were male or female. On the other hand anyone claiming priority just because they could would raise my ire.

There are some here who are obviously trying to prove that "Equality" has eroded the difference between genders. It has not

Would you not worry about your son being stranded either?

Seems a typical situation of wanting to cherry pick the good bits of equality but not taking on any of the bad. Either women wanted to be treated equal or they don't. I'm all for women getting equal pay, etc but I certainly don't think they should get preferential treatment in such a situation. The highest priority should be given to those stranded in an unsafe area, followed by those with children, the elderly and the disabled. Gender shouldn't come into it. I'd be really cheesed off if I had to wait hours while others waited much less purely based on gender.

I genuinely don't think women are more vulnerable in a given situation than a man to be honest. They both face different risks.

My opinion is different - as you say different genders face different risks. I think these risks occur most in different situations and there are given situations when a woman is the more vulnerable - and different situations when a man is.

The incidence of any kind of stranger attack is so low, it is almost not worth mentioning. However, the fear of it is harmful in itself ; so we should prioritise those who feel more afraid, or those who have people feeling afraid for them..

I've heard that if you are going to be murdered ; there's a 50 % chance it's someone you know, and a 25 % chance it's your partner. Unless you are a male praying mantis, when it's about 100 %.

Its happened to me and yes I felt vulnerable - esp as a bloke on a bike stopped to shout abuse at me for stopping half on the path (someone had given me a push off the road) - I wound my window down and shouted that I had broken down and he told me to f**k off!!!!! AA took 2 hours. I just locked myself in the car, what else can you do.

Thanks for an interesting mix of views. Perhaps I come from another era and feel overprotective of the fairer sex. Both my daughters can look after themselves and the younger one possibly would feel more vulnerable than the older one.

It's nothing to do with your question so it influences my initial view that you in some way get off on thinking about vulnerable women/girls being attacked.
