I take it you haven't got practical experience with claiming from a foreign compensation scheme. Some on here do, and would do everything to repeat the experience.

Thanks for reminding me about Icesave ;)

In that case the foreign scheme didn't fire up and the UK govt stepped in. They subsequently got their money back though fairly recently IIRC.

They enjoyed it so much that they are looking forward to the bank failing so they can do it again?

    Or perhaps a missing "not".

Can customers make deposits to the UB eSaver by debit card?

Apparently RBS & NatWest branches can be used to provide ID documents. Not sure I'd want to burden myself/their staff explaining it though.
For a different purpose, not this savings account, I did provide some ID to Ulster via an RBS Branch local to me. I just went in with my passport and Driving Licence (for proof of address), they copied it and passed it on to UB who processed it their end within a week.

RBS couldn't have been more helpful. Even gave me a nice cup of coffee and let me use their loos. The RBS Branch looked deserted, so they were probably grateful for someone to have a chat to. We talked about interest rates, and one of them recommended the Nationwide FlexDirect and FlexClusive Regular Saver. Not sure she is still working there now, lol.

I have just applied online and the final page told me that the service was not available and that I should close the page. They have however put a test of £1.01 to the credit card I gave for ID purposes.

Fair enough, I read it as a best buy table footnote in the Mail on Sunday (6/8) so maybe not the best of sources YMMV.

From a thread regarding Barlcaycard replacing their cashback card:

Just a quick update on my situation. I got a phone call from Barclaycard on Saturday who confirmed my new card was sent out on August the 3rd (old cashback offer ended on the 2nd ) and should be with my by the 17th at the latest

I received my replacement for this fairly recently and it also seemed delayed. The format of the letter matched that of the Ulster Bank one. I wonder if they share some overwhelmed card producing faciltiy (though the return addresses on the envelope were different, that doesn't really mean much).

Just phoned UB and have been told that on Friday 04th August they had been sent an email stating there had been a backlog for them receiving card readers from their suppliers, (that seems to be a new one), and that all readers should be received this week, (over 6 weeks since I applied online).

He has tried to put me through to complaints but can't get through to them, (probably busy with complaints), and is to ask them to call me back.

For those interested I received my card and pin today (two separate bits of post) after 20 days - just waiting the reader but understand I can use any old reader worst case.

I've also sent money to and from the account via the app on different days without problem.

Received my card reader this morning so I'm all up and running!
  • Reading this thread, I wonder if it will put off other banks from bringing out a market-leading savings account. If they don't have the staff and other resources (for example, card and card reader production capacity) to deal with the demand (as obviously Ulster Bank don't) it can back-fire on them. The demand will rise in proportion to how good the deal is, but I imagine that it is difficult to predict the demand with any degree of precision. Just fly it and see seems to be the policy.
