Received the above yesterday. This is the second of this type I've received, the other some months ago.
Ebay have confirmed it is a spoof. Clicking on the item requested eBay sign in, I didn't proceed further as it's obviously trying to steal an account. Apologies if similar has already been posted.

Does anyone have an actual phone number I can contact ebay in the uk on, rather than emailing them?

Unfortunately there is no help line at all, the only way to contact them is by email.

  • I've just received this dodgey looking email from an ebay member (greatm0ney) that was sent through ebay using the "Ask seller a question" link on the auction page. In the email was a link refering to an item that I'm "supposedly" selling. I am not sellling any items. The email looks genuine, until you read the links address (see complete email below). Clicking on the link doesn't do anything except take you to an error page ("This page can not be displayed"), however, it's the end sequence of letters and numbers that concerns me. It looks like this could be a potential way of retreiving somebodys ebay username and password.
Another thing I noticed is that the link in the email refers to a different item than the subject heading. Looking up the item number in the link shows a genuine auction (that is not mine). Looking up the item number in the email heading tells you that the item no longer exists or has been removed.
I have also looked up the ebay user but it looks like he/she doesn't exist.

I thought maybe it's a mistake on ebays behalf, but seeing 2 item numbers and a link that doesn't work tells me somethings not right here.
Since clicking the link I have changed my password just to be safe. Usually I find links are hidden and they take you to a specific site other than ebay or one that looks like ebay but isn't.

Update: Since posting this message I have noticed that the links contain "hxxp://0xcf234b2d/%20/" at the beginning of the address, which tells me this could be a spoof ebay site. The complete link is hxxp://0xcf234b2d/%20/signin.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI/index.htm. But as I said before, clicking the link did nothing.
I have removed the "tt" for any accidental clicks. Please do not visit the site.

Clicking the links below will take you directly to ebay and not to the address above. Also, notice the end time for this auction "Mar-01-06"
Clicking on the link under items description takes you to a completely different item (the one in the subject heading).
    Weird.

I have kept the email in it's entirety but have removed the redirected link. See what you make of it. Should I report it?

I got this and almost clicked on it!
You sell this beside your usual items? Or this listing is not yours?

  • I get these emails all of the time. It's soooo annoying. Now when I get a legit email I find myself being super skeptical and checking everything I possibly can before proceeding.

It is a spoof mail (hence the thread title) and just another way the scammers and phishers get access to real account details.

The point is that an inexperienced seller might be tempted to respond via their normal email address, thus notifying the phishers that they have hit a real address and can maybe try a scam mail.
