Do you not find it curious that all the jobs advertised in politico are based in Brussels? Now, why might that be.
Politico - belongs to The Economist which is rabidly pro-EU.
I think we,ll find that there is nothing to see here.0 -
That is why most of the 27 EU believe in the EU rather more that Britain ever has.
I think there is some truth in that.
I think also the fact that Germany, Spain etc have had fascist/totalitarian governments within living memory which we in the UK have not is relevant. When you suggest in the UK that there should be a source of law supreme over Westminster the idea is completely unpalatable, but I think in countries that have had fascism the idea of a 'higher power' to keep their governments in check is more appealing.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. My family are not Jewish but they fought actively/were wounded/lost close family in Warsaw during the Second World War.
You talk about holding grudges – but Germany has had ambitions to rule empires for a very long time. It occupied my parents' and grandparents' country (with horrendous cruelty, along with Russia) for more than a century before the First World War, as well as during the Second World War. Unfortunately, my family were very badly affected by what happened to them and their closest relations, and that's been passed down to their children and grandchildren. It's all very well saying forget and move on, chill, etc, but it's not easy and sometimes impossible, if experiences have been traumatic enough. My aunt – an academic and by no means stupid – couldn't even listen to anyone speaking the German language until the 1980s.
I'm sorry if you'd like to believe otherwise, but nations do each have their own character, which tends to prevail, and to resurface…
The EU was set up to try prevent anymore wars in Europe but we now risk as the years pass people forgetting the horrors of the past and countries will become more nationalistic and isolationist. Irony is the UK and USA are going down that slippery slope first :rotfl:This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I completely respect your viewpoint and as I say, neither me nor my family suffered to any great extent during the Second World War so I can't say with anything approaching certainty how I would react. What I have said is that I know of a family who not only survived but put the whole thing behind them. They are an amazing loving happy family.
I do take issue with you assertion that there was any suggestion in my posts that people should 'chill', though. I said no such thing and if I had it would have been crass beyond words.
I also don't agree with the idea that the German nation retains ambitions to expand its empire. I can only go on my experience and that has been that they have left that behind. It wouldn't be a massive jump to say that us Brits want to start Empire 2. I suspect that some do but the vast majority of us realise that taking control of a country and ripping out its minerals/spices etc isn't the just way to behave.0 -

Fair enough but for how long do you think you should keep the grudge? 60? 70? 100 years? Never?
Maybe you should seek professional help, especially if ill feeling towards has been passed on to you. Poor your children.
You must think it's a weird for the British government to seek FTA with the likes of India, Australia, etc. after the atrocities committed by the British Empire which are not much less than those of war times you describe.EU expat working in London0 -

Needlessly insensitive and I can't believe that you were thanked.0 -
I am devastated, I think I must rush down to the (French) beach, 150 meters away and swim out in to the med and............never think about it again.
By the way this is THE agenda for Monday in Brussels
https://ec.europa.eu/commission/sites/beta-political/files/agenda_2nd_round_for_press.pdf
I will be on the beach. Hope to catch the press Conference.

So the EU now want to discuss trade? As they were adamant that trade could not be discussed until all other items had been settled, we should welcome this development.0 -
Agreed I misread the cheddar stats and Cheddar is down. Is that good?
But while speciality cheeses are up French speciality cheeses are down 25%. Its in your referenced link https://dairy.ahdb.org.uk/market-information/processing-trade/imports-exports/uk-dairy-imports/#.WWoUW4WcEcC
So we seem to be buying more processed cheeses and not from France
There is not enough information to tell if this is a long term trend and if there are changes in any trends since June 2016.There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0 -

An important point Cogito, well spotted. However no mention (yet) in the U.K. Media.
It might get an airing in the Sunday Political shows.
