I dont use clear ones as the blanket will cover it all anyway :)

Shelly: Do you use pins to keep yours together? (I mean the blankets on the cake and then the ribbon on the blaknets?) I think they work perfectly but Ive used about 10 on each cake!

I use a safety pin at the back of the blanket to keep it together but I don't use any others i just glue my ribbon ends together tightly and they stay put. To be honest I hadn't thought about pinning the ribbons. :T

I have 3 pins at the back for the blanket (2 underneath the fold and one on top). 2 pins for each ribbon (so 4 on a normal cake). Then I have 2 pins on each sleepsuit and 1 on each mitten.

So thats.... 11 pins! I thought it worked but my mum got worried it could hurt someone. Lol.

I love this idea as an unusual gift! Not making one myself yet as no one I know is pregnant enough (friend at work is 3 weeks gone, so will do closer to the time).

But just had a thought regarding the pinning dilemma. Could you use a couple of nappy pins to go with the theme? Then if they are seen, it can be part of the whole nappy, baby thing.
