Hi everyone
Very quiet on this thread just lately!! Is everyone making like mad!!!!
I am having real problems getting the tiers to stay together - is anyone else having problems with this? It's O.K. while it's just sat there, but if you were to start carrying it about, it would soon look lobsided.
I've tried the barbeque scewers but they don't hold anything. Has anyone used tubes or anything else in the centre etc? I wonder what the proffesional companies use?
Hello Moonpenny haven't been on here much because i've got a few more projects on the go so very busy at moment and had lots of nappy cakes to make. I always put double sided tape on the cake board to secure the bottom layer and it generally stays quite well. I also use kebab skewers and these stop a little movement but not brilliant. I just think that you have to transport them carefully and they should be ok. My hubby asked me to make him one to give to a friend in work but instead of putting it in the carwell straight he placed it at an angle on front seat and its gone lopsided so i'm having to secure it all again before he gives it to his friend. Men!!!!!!
P.s forgot to say but I usually place a Johnsons talc in middle of cake and this helps keep the middle and top tier together xxLittle Miss Chatterbox

Hi Moonpenny. once they are wrapped in cellophane they tend to be more secure. But if i am going to be carrying one quite a distance i have in the past used a wooden dowel. the type to hold kitchen rolls etc. OR once when i was stuck i did use a garden cane cut up and put two together in the centre.
hope its of help to you.0 -
Hi moonpenny I used a bottle of bucks fizz (my SILs fave) in the middle of mine.
Am planning on using a bottle of cider (its smaller in height) for this one as the daddy loves the stuff.Green and White Barmy Army!0 -
Another idea for the middle - in my local wilkinsons (which is a largish one) i found a 'cotton wool roll'. It was fairly thick, but really, really sturdy - solid, even! and was as tall as my second tier which held things together brilliantly. I found them in the ladies make-up/toiletries bit rather than the baby section where there was just cotton wool balls etc. HTH xx
Shelley - Men! - completely agree! :rolleyes:0 -
Hi everyone,
I have used the bamboo skewers to secue the layers. The 3 tier one I sent via courier was secured in this way and transported on it's side and it arrived fine. It was a tiny bit lopsided but possibly no more than when it went into the box!

Thanks everyone for your ideas.
Shelley - do you just stick the tape in the middle? Doesn't it rip the nappies?
I do put talc and wash in the bottom layer but it only goes halfway up the second and as the rest is filled with clothes etc, it isn't sturdy enough.
Yummymsmummy - good idea about the cotton wool. Will try that!
Was thinking of trying a card or plastic cylinder in the middle and filling that, but it wouldn't be very wide because of the top tier being small.
Has anyone tried anything like this?0 -
Moonpenny,
I had thought about trying the inner tube of a kitchen roll but to try and roll a nappy inside it to give it the strength, haven't tried it yet though!

Hi - yes I make a cross in the middle with double sided tape and no it doesnt rip the nappies. The tape is not that strong but enough to hold it together.
Some brilliant ideas here.
Yummymsmummy the cotton roll idea is genius:j:j:j:jLittle Miss Chatterbox

Hi Polly1976,
Have you tried the nappy cakes yet or have you been bitten by the bug yet?

Hi Polly1976,
Have a go! That's how most of us started, I was just like you, my friend is due in october so I wanted to have a go last month to give me plenty of time to get it right! I was surprised by how easy it is and addictive! Honestly I was really pleased with my first attempt and others seemed genuinely impressed and it only took about an hour! I've done a few for people at work now including a big 3 tier for someone leaving on maternity leave on friday. I took it in today and they are thrilled with it and can't wait to give it to her on friday.
Have a go, you will be amazed at how easy it is and you will have great fun fiddling to get your desired results!
Best advice I can give is to have a look at pics on here and generally on the internet and decide what style you like and take it from there. I have amazed myself and I'm sure loads of us felt exactly the same when we did our first one.
