Sunnysaver you dragged my post up from the darkest depths :rotfl: Glad it helped though :)

RE moonpennys cake it looks like a blanket :) some of the blankets from places like matalan come with hoods. They look really pretty on cakes :)

    Your post is great!

Just a question: if I didn't want to buy a cake board, would a piece of cardboard cut out round and covered with pretty paper be ok, or is it not strong enough?

Another thing is: how do you tuck in the towels so neatly? is it just practice?

Re nappies: how can you tell what colour the nappies you buy are? Do they say on the packet? Cos aren't some patterned? I just want plain white ones (or pink) for a six-month old.

I got married recently, am having problems conceiving and the last thing I want is to be seen looking at nappies for some busybody to see me and start asking sensitive questions.

HI all was planning to cut lawn but its raining, so i decided to remake one of the muslin cakes, i said about putting some cardboard in to give a better finish , well i had none, so i used some a4 joined together placed it inside the muslin using the iron to get a clean edge and my local shop is keeping me the shirt clips so two of those and the finish is brill so neat and have raised one of the muslin cloths about 1in above the nappies it really looks good, shame my camera is flat cos i will take a couple of photos later today. Hope you don't mind me passing on this to you experts but its dead at work and i am trying to make this fool proof for when dd takes over next week.

I think that would look lovely

Ok personally I don't use cake boards now, once the cake is wrapped in cello they are perfectly fine without a board. If you want to use some cardboard cut it a bit smaller than the base of your cake so it can't be seen (personal preference but I prefer not to see cake boards) roughly 10 inch should be ok.

Towels is practise, if you lay it out hood down on the floor then fold the hood back so you can see just the hood then continue to fold the towel in the same way to the height of the nappies (I always have 1 rolled nappy at the side of me when folding so I can make sure it is the right size.) you will eventually get the same folding as on moonpennys cake above, this works with both hooded towels and blankets and looks neater :)

For nappies, personally I use huggies and always use size 3 these are white apart from the band on the top (which is winnie the pooh) they come in a green and blue pack. A lot of the other girls also use these. Only other nappies I know of which are white that I have used personally was morrisons own in a size 1 they are completely white but have a lemon band. :) I am sure some of the other girls will be able to tell you any other brands they have found which are all white.

    Hi Sunny Saver

Glad you like my cake! Blanket is just one of the usuals from Matalan with a hood. (Like the hooded towels) They were £3 but a month ago were selling at 3 for 2. Might still be on in different stores!

These are quite easy to fold as they are square. (Most of the other blankets are oblong which is tricky)
Put “picture” side face down on bed and fold in half bringing corner down to meet picture corner.. You then have a triangle with “picture” on bottom point. Now start folding (height of nappies) from long straight edge down to point. Usually does about 4 folds. Turn over and pic is in the middle. Place around cake putting one end under the other at back. Hope you get my instructions – always hard trying to explain what you’ve done!

Chatty, I love your cake with the hand knitted stuff. Would look lovely as “winter cakes” with a “snowball” hat on top.

It makes me :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:when you say 'it's easy'... famous last words!

I think what you experienced 'napsters' should do is start another thread with step-by-step pictures showing each fold for Ms Dopey AKA me.

I wonder who 'invented' nappy cakes. I'd never heard of them until I came across this thread.

I just looked on Matalan's site> it's really cheap! And the stuff you make from there are sooo beautiful!

I just showed my mum this thread and pics of your cakes/bouquets. She thinks they are allllll beautiful... I like the way she said: 'why don't you make one just like that one, or that one.' (As if I know what to do!) But my mum knits/sews/cooks: you know does mumsy things, so maybe she'll help (if you get my drift, ie do it for me :)).

Hi Rusty, I know you have said before that you add up the real price of nappies etc not the sale price, when you do your costings. Do you do this on everything e.g. the ellies that should be £3 each etc?

Sunny Saver – Pampers Nappies are white with a yellow band across top. Mind you,
they are newborn size 2, so not sure about other sizes.
P.S. Maybe your mum will get the bug as well! LOL!

Julie H – Good Luck for your craft fair! Hope you sell loads!
