Not done any cake making for a while as I seem to be tied up with baby sitting my grandson.
Been painting today and trying to re-arrange the "spare room" I work in. I seem to be getting more and more stuff!!!! I keep most of it in the big plastic storage boxes from Wilcos but have just had to buy yet ANOTHER one. I also have their plastic Drawer units which are great for putting all my bits in. Just need another room now! LOL!A creative mess is better than tidy idleness0 -
I went to the Asda at Cribbs today (stopped for breakfast), and they had LOADS of cream ones. So I got a few. But no coloured ones, still not found them
So seeing as Asda have changed to their spring range, anyone not like it as much?Green and White Barmy Army!0 -
Hi ladies, I haven't looked at the spring stock as I have draws fit to burst with stock, I stocked up on loads of it when it was cheap and I am still working my way through it
I am guessing the ellies will now become the bears, although mine stock absolutely no cuddlys now since they got rid of the ellies, I still have 2 blue 1 pink and 2 neutral ones in stock though and loads of TYs still!Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -
Feeling a little deflated today as my friend was a little negative yesterday about the babycakes! She was the friend that I was going to give the pink one to for her friend who's just had a little girl. She thought it looked lovely in the picture but when she asked me how much it would be I said £25 and she said 'ooh I wouldn't spend that kind of money on one'! and also she then went onto say why have you used size 3 nappies - the baby won't be in them for AGES!! as her little boy who is about 16 months has only just gone into size 4! and she said pampers are much better than huggies!
Luckily another friend has emailed me today and thinks that they look lovely and would like me to make one up for her cousin who is expecting a little girl at the end of the month - I'd given her an idea of pricing and she doesn't seem to think its a problem.
Do you guys think that £25 was too much for my pink cake I posted on here? Its just that if I'd paid full price for the items in it they would have cost a total of £23.65 so I just rounded it up?0 -

well ive made my first three tier today
what do you think?
you are all so naughty getting me addicted to this:rotfl:
Just mean't to say as well how lovely your cake is - what items have you included? and how do you do your bows so lovely?0 -
Well here is my first attempt - have been going on about doing one for weeks now & finally done it - I'm actually going to give it to a friend of a friend who has just given birth to a baby girl! Any comments/suggestions welcome - its not totally finished as waiting for ribbons to be delivered - found this pink bit in a cupboard...
It was a bit tricky doing the nappies and I don't know whether I've used enough - I wanted to use about 40 as it is a 3 tier but in the end only used 36 - Whaddya think?
Items are:
Nappies - Mr T's special offer - £2.88 (norm approx £5.40)
Butterfly Fleece blanket - Matalan - £3.00
Bunny Hat - Minimode MrB's - £2.00 (norm £4.00)
Bunny bootees - Minimode MrB's - £2.00 (norm £4.00)
Pink lacy Socks x2 pairs MrB's - £1.00 (norm £2.00)
Bunny Bib x2 @ back of cake - £0.50 (norm £1.00)
Bunny soft Toy - Tescos - £3.00
Feeding Cloth x1 - Matalan - £0.67 (part of pack of 3)
Muslin x1 - Mr T's - £0.58 (part of pack of 6)
So total cost to me with shopping around/savings = £15.63
Cost if paid normal prices = £23.65
I was going to put in some toiletries stuff as well but tbh as I've done this as a practice run & not going to be paid for it and its for a friend of a friend I've decided not to - do you think that matters? I think its still a nice gift to get & its cost me about £15 so its not too much for my pocket!! Only thing I'm thinking is if I wanted to start doing these & charging people then if I charged say £25 would it be too much? that would mean something like £1.35 for my time! How much profit roughly do you guys make on yours? anyways might try and knock up a one tier bathtime cake later as I bought a really cute 'chick' loofah in Wilkos yesterday!! How many nappies do you guys normally do in a one tier cake?
I await your comments! she says quietly chomping on nails LOL!
Hi Popkins I had a look back and found your cake and I think its beautiful and def worth £25 not just for the items it contains but for your time and effort in making it look so beautiful. I understand why you feel deflated after your friends comments but please dont let it put you off.
I for one disagree with what she said about nappy sizes all babies are very different. My daughter was tiny and took a long time to get into that size but we had bought loads of small nappies before she was bor to stock up. My son on the other hand was massive lol and despite having lots of operations etc in the first few months of his life he put on weight nice and quickly and was soon in size 3 he has slowed down now he is 16 months and just got in a 5! But I just wanted to show you how different they can be in sizes. At the end of the day every little helps when you get a new baby!! Too many people gift things that are newborn sizes then you are left to buy the next sizes by yourself!!
Anyway sorry for going on but I was really annoyed that someone had made you feel bad about your lovely cakes!!
:rolleyes:0 -

Your cakes are beautiful and I wouldn't let her comment get you down, maybe your friend wasn't expecting to pay that much for a gift. I am pretty sure that £25 is not alot of money for the new grandparents/close family etc to pay, but maybe for others, a cheaper option would be a good idea.
As for the size of nappies, each and every baby is different. My sister swapped between pampers and huggies everytime her DS went up a size, and as my DD was quite a 'chunky little monkey' I found that Tesco's were more generous and turned out to be my favourite choice. Everyone will have their own preference, but have yet to hear of any recipient of my cakes complain about receiving nappies!!! At least by using size 3, they are not going to be too small.A creative mess is better than tidy idleness0 -

as for the nappy debate I think it differs with each person! With my first child I used nothing but pampers which got expensive!! I now use tescos as I find them just as good quality. I have in the past had a few problems with huggies but only cause my daughter used to drink a lot lol! I have recently used them for my son with no such problem and I also know people that swear by them and use nothing but!! Think its trial and error really a nappy is just a nappy at the end of the day!! x0 -
Popkins please don't feel deflated your cake is lovely, ignore your friend and let her spend money on a baby gift that doesn't look as good!
£25 is the right kind of price to be paying in my opinion, however had you paid full price for items then you need to add more on!lesley_mac wrote: »as for the nappy debate I think it differs with each person! I have to comment on this, I use huggies for my cakes and size 3, I prefer them to pampers as they roll nice and also work out cheaper.
However huggies don't work with my daughter they don't fit her around the waist, never have done from day 1, I always use pampers purely because the nearest tescos is a 20 min drive away so pampers are local and I buy them on offer and stock up!
As for the size 3 issue within cakes from my own experience size 3 nappies are generally used around 4-5 months (babys age) sometimes before if the baby is born big, I have known babies to go straight into size 3 nappies from birth due to their shape etc.Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -
Hi Popkins, Your cake is beautiful and I wouldn't let the comments of 1 erson put you off. Thee are always going to be people who don't like this sort of thing but the majority do. Also, I think you are not charging enough! I would charge at least £30.
Am really annoyed this morning. Have just recieved an order of ribbons I placed where the delivery cost me £6.50and 4 of the colours are wrong. I ordered a satin0
