I got some rubber bands to help me until the ribbons are in place (still waiting for them) and it was much easier to manage.
I actually use a 3rd inch thick piece of elastic (just tied in knot) to support all the nappies whilst making it up. Then tie some white string around, before removing the elastic.

That's what I was doing Candy, but DS1 has lost my elastic!
I was going to take the bands off, but like rjh090384 says the ribbon covers them anyway and it's much easier to leave them on - I'm all fingers and thumbs when it comes to these nappy cakes LOL!

I actually purchased a bag of hair bands from the chemist the other day, clear in colour, a sort of stretchy plastic. 300 of them for 99p.
They look much more neater around the nappies than the elastic bands, and you don't have to worry about them showing through the ribbons.

Hi Candyb - have not made any Christmas cakes this yr but hope to buy stuff in the sales for next yr. There's no problem with sizes if made (and sold!) early enough but I think I will do what you said and buy just the colours without all the pics on. Like you said, it can be made Christmasy with bibs and socks!

Ooooh bargain - will keep my eyes peeled for those as I have a couple more cakes to do in the next few months.

Gah, still no ribbons, which means I can't finish my cake and share photos. *stamps feet and sulks*
Ah well, maybe Monday (although knowing Royal Mail lately probably not!)
