Been in touch with the baby fair - they've said I have to choose - either edible cakes or nappy cakes - no doubling up as it isn't fair on other exhibitors

moonpenny my Asda didnt have them :( Just blankets which are no good for me as I need the design to face the other way (know what i mean?)

O.k, done some maths tonight and here are my spendings....

Nappies: 14p each (use about 30 in a cake)
    Base board: 50p each (1 a cake)
    Booties: 75p each (1 a cake)
    Baby Bath: 84p each (2 a cake)
    Wine: £3.33 each (1 a cake)
    Suits: 71p each (2 a cake)
    Socks: 50p a pair (3 pairs a cake)
    Muslin Cloth: £1.17 each (1 a cake)
Baby Towel: Allowing £3.50 a cake although I havent found any yet :(
Toy: Allowing £3 a cake but again havent found any!!

So I worked out each cake costs me.... £25.52 and Im charging £30

Anyone got any tips on how I can make things cheaper? As obviously this doesnt include wrapping costs!!

Nappies: 14p each (use about 30 in a cake) shop for items on offer my nappies are normally around 9p each and I charge for 11p each. Depends on make you use? I normally use pampers or huggies.
Base board: 50p each (1 a cake) Fantastic price! however once they are wrapped they are generally secure and most will not need a board. You could cut a disc of cardboard? this is the MSE way
    Booties: 75p each (1 a cake)
Baby Bath: 84p each (2 a cake) Maybe cut down to 1 each cake?
Wine: £3.33 each (1 a cake) do you really need to add wine? most new parents want to try breastfeeding and a lot won't touch wine or any alcohol if breastfeeding. You could substitute the wine for maybe some other kind of bath smellies? maybe for mum to soak in?
Suits: 71p each (2 a cake) sleepsuits? Why 2? Cheaper to add one :)
Socks: 50p a pair (3 pairs a cake) cut down to 1 pair? or you could get away with 2 again only cuts the price a little but a little more profit.
Muslin Cloth: £1.17 each (1 a cake) Look around for these I bulk bought mine off a seller on ebay, got lemon, pink and blue think there was around 24 muslins for around £12 ish? think I paid £15 including postage so mine work out at 62.5p each so charge 63p
Baby Towel: Allowing £3.50 a cake although I havent found any yet :(Baby towels are £4 in asda, however in primark I am pretty sure they are £3 and they last forever. I still use my sons old one (he is 6) I use it on my daughter who is 17 months so they last well!)
Toy: Allowing £3 a cake but again havent found any!! Sounds silly but Asda normally have some nice ones, as do tescos. Although today on my travels I found a gorgeous giraffe and also a elephant in the pound shop! and guess how much they were :rotfl:

So I worked out each cake costs me.... £25.52 and Im charging £30

Sorry I just wanted to add my bits to yours up there ... Can I ask where you buy things from?

I have added my bits in red :) Hope this helps you a little or at least gives you a bit of an idea. I sell my 3 tier cakes for £19.99 which gives you an idea of how much mine cost to actually make up. If you want me to break down all my costs I can do that for you aswell. Any more help you need just shout.

Becs I had seen them bibs advertised in one of the baby magazines (I only got it as I had a free voucher for it and wanted the freebies ) Although I was tempted to buy them ;) glad I didn't though as my daughter had bad reflux ... what went down came straight back up :(

A quick suggestion for you ... trumpette baby socks ... they are quite expensive yet I think they are fantastic! here is a pic ...

Thanks Bec's! I just need to be making £500 a month to contribute towards the bills by 2010 (when we start a family and I either go part-time or give up work) so am thinking of starting things rolling now. I've seen a local baby fair that I'm interested in doing but it's not until next March and have a nappy cake on display in a glass cabinet with some edible cakes in my place of work!

Found out today that my partners company send out a bouquet of flowers to any new parents in the company, I think I may write to them and offer my services as nappy cakes are much nicer than flower:p

    Hi Leni,

Fantastic idea about the nappy cakes instead of flowers, however I doubt you could make that kind of profit from nappy cakes. I like everyone else do it as a bit of extra pocket money and whilst I have sold quite an amount over the last couple of months you will never make a lot off it due to the outlay before hand etc if that makes sense.
Ideal if you could do a couple of other little sidelines to bring in extra income? but I doubt you could guarentee that kind of money on a monthly basis.

My main source of income would be my edible cakes which is doing well at the moment! I have a facebook page and a website and in the past week alone have sent out orders totalling £240, plus £100 deposit for a wedding cake next July. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=50394095976

I'm just looking at additional side lines as to make the £500 a month, I need atleast 20 wedding cakes a year plus about 48 celebration cakes a year!

    Muslin Squares - 5 for £1.50
Towel Hoodies - 3 for £4.50 (plain but 2 white and 1 lemon)
Bids but can't remember price, think it was 5 for £1.50

these are all from memory but sure the prices are right!

    Hooray,

My toys catalogue finally arrived today and have some great stuff. Decided on Some Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck Beanie Rattles and Snowman toys for xmas cakes, then can't decide between paddington bear, nutty brown hare or spot the dog for my neutral cakes. What does everyone reckon? I think I'm more torn between Paddington and Nutty brown hare at the mo.

It's nutbrown hare not nutty brown hare! Shows how much I know of him as well doesn't it!:rotfl: He's from the range "Guess how much I love you", he seems quite nice though and I have seen him used in other things aswell.
My hunch was paddington as think the people buying the cakes at the posh fair will be Grannies and they will definately have heard of Paddington! They work out at £3.52 each which is pretty good I think.
