Can't upgrade from XP to Windows 10

Thanks Paddy, your points are very valid and really appreciate you taking time out to advise on this frustrating issue.0

Yes because they extended the free upgrade period (so far no date when this will be pulled), but then failed to publish this extension, so unless you are following MS etc. then you would not know, so like the OP many would have purchased Win 10Anyone who needs to upgrade their PC to Win 10 - can still do it for free
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade being the source
Don't be put off by the ACCESSIBILITY name - the downloads are standard
But this needs Win 7 as a minimum to upgrade from - EXCEPT for a fresh bootable build - so boot on the media (downloaded elsewhere and burnt to DVD) and away you go for free - assuming that your Win XP PC is compatible with Win 10
I really wish that the OP had asked for advice prior to spending £100 unnecessarily0 -
This is what is said to upgrade from XP to 7Can I get a free upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7?
Hardware: Your hardware may not be up to the task of running Windows 7--and even if it is, your drivers won't work. Unfortunately, a simple upgrade install is out of the question, too; Microsoft requires that you XP users do a clean install. ... Not all XP applications work in Vista, or in Windows 7
so you wont be able to upgrade from XP to 100 -
Thankyou Heedtheadvice, really helpful post, and yes think your recommendation is the way to go.
Like most things in life we are wiser after the event but under estimated how great this forum is for advice and help and will certainly use it the future.
Once again thank you all.0 -
Yes as Heedtheadvice said if you can buy a new HDD, removed the HDD with XP on and fit the new HDD which will be clean and then install fresh in their. This way if anything goes wrong you can just switch back HDD so you have the XP HDD with everything still intactThankyou Heedtheadvice, really helpful post, and yes think your recommendation is the way to go.

making sure your PC is compatible is your responsibility and not a retailers, so if it is incompatible then it has not been mis sold, also you cannot upgrade XP to Win 10 which has been pointed out, this is all the buyers responsibility to check
Not fit for purpose (you stated you wanted an UPGRADE which would keep all your XP settings etc and Say that your have now found out that your PC is not even compatible with Win10 so you were mis-sold
also the Consumer Rights Act 2015 statesWhat rights do consumers have in respect of digital content?
For the first time under UK consumer law, specific standards will apply to every transaction for the supply of digital content, and consumers will have specific remedies available if the digital content is not supplied to the prescribed standard. The standards applicable to digital content are that it should be[4]:
of a satisfactory quality
fit for a particular purpose
in compliance with description
which it will be all 3 of the above, just not compatible with his machine.0 -
Too late now, but W7 would probably have been a better OS to upgrade to.
Even then sometimes it was not easy.
For example
Dell Dimension 5000's desktop towers made in around 2005/2006 were not an easy upgrade from Xp to win 7.
This was because Broadcom's integrated RJ45/Cat5 internet connection driver used in it was never upgraded/re-issued by Broadcom for Win 7.
So you had to faddle about with putting in an external pci-whatever card into it for your internet.
So not many were upgraded.
Just another example of obscure things to catch you out which unless you were highly tech saavy you would never guess.0 -
Install Linux Mint! The old kit running XP will be good for another 10 years!0

OR... you could just run the XP driver in W7 Compatability Mode, and it would have used the BCM port quite happily

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Regarding 'fit for purpose' if the purchaser states a specific need such 'to upgrade from XP to win 10' and they were sold a product that would not do that then it cannot be considered for for purpose!0
