I don't honestly think that there is one clear winning alternative here. There is quite simply nothing out there in the market as good as a straight no nonsense 1% Cashback card. So they will be different alternative solutions depending on individual circumstances. That seems clear from the poll I hosted.
RIP my Barclaycard Amex
No problem for me given I need to eatWill spend plenty of money at tesco.

As for Asda and Tesco CCs here's where Aldi and lidl need to launch a credit card!!!! They're missing a trick for all the hardcore moneysavers out there!!!0

Just got accepted for the American Express platinum card which gives the 1% so bye bye Barclycard with your .5%.
Since Amex is not accepted at all retailers, it's probably a good idea to keep the Barclaycard Visa as a back up.
My complaint via secure message today resulted in a £50 goodwill offer. This is the 2nd goodwill payment that they have paid me; I also got a similar amount if not more when they axed the 1% World Mastercard around 2013.
I have had this account since the Egg Money Days and spend around 1200GBP per month on average and always clear the full amount by Direct Debit.
I am not sure what I bring to Barclaycard that they want to keep me? Is it on the off chance that I might pay them interest one day? It's quite bizarre for me to understand!
On another note, I am reading about the cap on Visa & Mastercard charges that was brought in last year. (EU Law) Since there is now a 0.3% maximum charge on merchant fees, all the cashback companies (except Amex, seems they are exempt) are clearly making a loss on all customers who pay in full each month. I suppose the percentage of customers who do pay interest is more than enough to pay it for it though! Having some sort of reward scheme is an attractive feature for interest and non-interest paying customers...so I can least understand the logic of the setup even if they are making a loss on some customers.0 -
I sent an email via secure message on Saturday and on Sunday they phoned me and offer a £50 goodwill payment which I accepted. I have already got a Costco amex card which pays 1% and will use the Barclaycard for retailers who don't accept amex.0

For those of you who have managed to get £50 / other amounts for gesture of goodwill payments - do you have a rough guideline of what you wrote in your complaint please?I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards. Tell them you have been a loyal customer for x years. You are very disappointed that the 1% cashback is being removed and only the 0.5% lower rate is available.
The 0.5% rate will mean that you lose £x going forward.
Changing your credit card details will also be a pain.
What can they do to resolve this complaint (and can they pay 30% of your goodwill credit to Mr Sam Dude).
The magic word is 'complaint', which seems to unlock the goodwill credit.0 -

Hello!
This is what I wrote. Please don't copy it word for word.Make sure you send it as a complaint message.
Thank for your letter dated June 2017 where you detail the plans to discontinue the American Express and Visa cashback cards and replace it with a single Visa Cashback card.
The letter details that the new Visa card will earn 0.5% cashback instead of the 1% I currently receive on the American Express card. As you can see almost all of my spending is on the American Express card so you are effectivily cutting the cashback I receive by 50%. I am very disappointed about this news, originally I am Egg Customer of which Barclaycard bought the business back in 2011. Since then, Barclaycard has slowly removed all of the rewards associated with the product I originally signed up for. (1% cash back, free purchase insurance, free travel insurance e.tc)
I am very disappointed about the reduction in the cashback rate and I will now be looking for replacement provider unless you can offer me any incentive to stay with you?0 -
Thank you both, very helpful and Frank I will definitely not copy it word for wordI'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards. I also added this to my email.
Again I would like to express my disappointment with this change, as I would like to stay loyal to Barclaycard, a good will gesture of £50 would help in the loss of cashback that I would have to endure.0 -
I made a complaint, they phoned me, couldn't offer me anything. I closed the complaint at the end of the call.
To be fair, I've already had £50 out of Barclaycard a year or two ago when I threatened to leave, I've never carried a balance, and I like their app/online banking, so will probably just keep the 0.5% card for when my AMEX Gold card isn't accepted.
You can't win them all.0
