And another for new build, but bear in mind some of the lowest prices quoted are on Help to Buy deals, but there are plenty up to £120k.

You don't think it was just poor race relations which caused the riots in Bradford and Toxteth then?!? Or do you seriously think there's no connection between social deprivation and anti-social behaviour...:rotfl:0 -

I think that the vast majority of people in those cities are ordinary, decent people going about their lives every day and not risking being murdered or beaten up every time they leave the house! Just as most people in London or Birmingham or anywhere else that has ever had riots or social problems are.
I also think some Southerners have some very funny ideas about 'the north' as if a different species of person lives here, and would benefit from visiting every now and then.0 -

I'd offer you some salt and vinegar for that chip on your shoulder, but as you're a northerner, you'll probably want mushy peas or gravy... :beer:0 -

You can hardly blame me with some of the comments on here!
(You should lay off the salt, it's terrible for your arteries.)

Yes, its a family thing.0 -
I've lived in plymouth before which is a city in so called "lovely devon" and there are many horrible socially deprived parts of it. I dont believe cheap streets/places up north can be much worse?
The point is its cheaper in north and wales largely because the country is !!!!!!. Its our obsession with london (+ foreign investment yeah), temperature which make it what? twice the price in the south on average.
I have no interested in any temperature beyond 23 degrees tbh and london is a smog filled death hole (london nice to visit for a couple days mind you but would hate to live there long term).0 -
It'd be worth spending £120k in Teesside, lots of VFM but as many other posters have said, poor job prospects. If you're confident your self-employment is secure, go for it (I'm from there and would like to leave London & return).
I'd factor in the cost of a car if you don't drive already too as public transport is non-existant.
A fairly modest mortgage would cover you for:

I am from Newcastle/Gateshead and you can buy terraced flats in Gateshead around the Saltwell Park area for £60k to £75k. These are on streets where as a male in his 50's I would be happy to walk along alone any time of the day or night. Public transport is good and you can be in the centre of Newcastle within 15 min. Or the Metro centre within 30 min.

ID BE MORTGAGE FREE
Why want to be mortgage free? With so low interest rates, having a mortgage is not as bad as it seems.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0
