Whats the best cheap place to live in UK - wales or north/north east etc

I know, it went mad here for a while
Even when we were looking, a house off plan would be say 110k,time it was built it would be going for 330k
Within A year of moving here our house was valued at double what we paid. A year after it was worth about a third less then we paid.
Thankfully things are picking up and the half built developments abanded in the crash, have been bought and are being finished and new houses are springing up everywhere again. This time at sensible prices0 -

One of the reasons these places are cheap is that there's b*gger all employment, opportunities and frankly, hope, for the inhabitants, so society crumbles, and this sort of behaviour is perfectly acceptable.
Another way of looking at it is to consider than some people will pay more to avoid characters such as these, and consider a sense of personal safety in the area they live worth the extra money.0 -

On second thoughts, no, don't come and live in the north.
Have you even visited 'The North'?
You want to buy a house for £60,000, and you want to live somewhere 'nice' - good luck.
Why don't you just get a 25 year mortgage and buy a decent house in a decent area.
Sorry, i meant we are trying to avoid the north in the middle kinda bit and up due to we know people there we are trying to avoid.0 -
I've lived in Teesside my whole life and work in Hartlepool and there's some beautiful areas around here- and cheap! I've just had an offer accepted for £130,000 on a lovely 4 bed property in a semi-rural area and that's at the top end budget for this area. Thoroughly recommended :j
Yeah im considering north east, i did go up there once, people seem alright in the nicer parts and the accent is fine. I'd need to find a cheap street which either isn't that bad or the way the house is set up i can get in and out without being murdered:D

Are you serious? You know people in the "north in the middle" and you are avoiding an entire region of the UK to try and avoid them?0 -

Oh come on! As if Bradford and Liverpool are just full of people walking round with black eyes and limbs in plaster all the time because they just can't stop themselves battering each other in Tesco! :rotfl:0 -

.
The thing is, once the neighbours get to know you they'll probably get more creative and resourceful in their attempts...0 -
OP, County Durham and Teesside fit the bill price wise, loads of former mining towns with properties at sensible prices, just do your research on Google maps, crime statistics, public transport etc.
You'll be looking at either ex Local Authority houses or older terraced/end terraced mainly.
In some areas you may find new builds at around the £100-110k mark.
Your biggest problem is likely to be lack of work prospects, if you still need to work.0 -
