It is important that we know where we come from, because if you do not know where you come from, then you do not know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you are going. If you don't know where you're going, you're probably going wrong.

    Evening Folks :D

As promised, here's the recipe for Stovies...

    STOVIES RECIPE
Stovies – if you were to ask 100 Scots how to make them, you would get 100 different variants…
Every family, it seems, has their own recipe that has evolved through the generations with each one adding their own wee bit into the mix.
This is MY recipe which has evolved from my Gran’s recipe. Feel free to give it a try and adapt to suit your own tastes.
    You’re going to need a BIGGER pot… :D

    Ingredients
Tatties (Potatoes) – 6 big ones, peeled and diced
Neeps (Turnip / Swede) & Currets (Carrots) – a pack of these ready diced
    A large Leek – chopped into rings…
A large Onion – sliced in diced (or a pack of ready sliced n diced)
    Diced Beef (400 – 500g)
    Minced Beef (400 – 500g)
    Beef links Sausages (8 – 12 sausages)
    A Tin Baked Beans
    A Tin Garden peas
    Beef Stock (One pint)
A generous dash of Brown Sauce (HP, Worcester etc.)

    Method
Firstly, get a BIG pot for this… or adapt the recipe to suit a smaller batch.
Gran made this in a HUGE pot and it would last a week…
Prep the veggies and put em in the bottom of the pot.
Brown the Diced Beef and the sausages in another pot and put in a large casserole dish or bowl to side
Brown the Minced Beef and put that to side too
Prep the stock and pour it over the veggies
Put in the Minced Beef, then the Diced Beef and sausages
Add the tin of Baked Beans
Add the tin of Garden Peas
Add another 2 pints of water to pot
Cook as you would a pot of stew…
When it’s almost ready, add a generous dash of your favourite type of brown sauce (HP, Worcester etc.)
Add gravy granules if you want to thicken it up a bit...
Season with salt n pepper to taste...
It needs no accompaniment, it’s a meal all in it’s own.
    Enjoy :D

Will add the Steak n ale recipe once I've typed it up too

Steak n Ale Stew (Slow Cooker)
This is for a 5.5L Slow Cooker pot…
    Ingredients
Two packs of ALDI’s Casserole Veg Mix
    2 x 400g packs of Diced Beef
A bottle of decent Ale or a can of Stout (500ml at least… I used approx. 700ml of Home Brew :D )
    Gravy Granules (two heaped Tablespoons)
    Worcester sauce
    Salt and Pepper
    Method
Put veggies in bottom of slow cooker
Put a wee dash of oil in a frying pan or pot and brown the Diced Beef
Prep approx. 500ml of Gravy using two tablespoons of granules. Mix well and then pour over the veggies.
Add the meat to the pot.
Pour the Ale / Stout over the meat.
Add in another pint of cold water from tap.
Add a generous dash of sauce.
    A pinch of salt.
    A pinch of pepper.
    Put on the lid.
Cook on low for approx. 8 hours or more…
Add more Gravy Granules to thicken it up if you like.
Best served with creamy mashed tatties… and Ale ;)

    There ye go folks
    Enjoy

  • Sounds great but definitely different from my Granny's. Her's was to use up leftovers to which you added sliced potatoes, carrot, turnip and any other vegetables you had in the garden. I think she might have put sausage in as well. Mind you she was born in 1889 so the recipe probably developed over the years.
