  • Interesting seeing the price of KTF's Gas.
EDF supply me at 0.02482p per kWh and a daily standing charge of 0.189p which with my consumption is a saving of £42.47 pa compared with Top Shopper.

Wow so your standing charge is very high. Hence the massive discounts on your powerpacks. This simply confirms powershops reasons for the differing discounts

My standing charge is constant on standard or after discounts ie 16.6p per day

Therefore all I do is take the cost of my last month's bill may June bill was a mere £20.08 pence. I then subtract the standing charge cost for May June's bill it was 31 days x 16.6p = £5.146
So my actual usage cost was 20.08-5.146 = £14.934

I then divide that by my kWh used which for June was 156 kwh

That works out as 9.57p per kWh

Anyone any idea how to calculate it with a variable standing charge,?? I guess you could just use the highest standing charge figure or lowest standing charge figure on your tariff but that wouldn't be totally correct

Despite Powershop showing the same daily rate for baseline and after Powerpack purchase, in fact your daily standing charge is paid out of the same 'pot' of discounted credit that your units of consumption are paid for. So, it is more correct to calculate a discounted rate for your daily standing charge using the same discount you apply to the units of consumption.

I know my way of calculation is a simplified way ie by keeping the standing charge constant but it gives me some idea of my true unit rate. I can use this to compare against other utility companies.

Powershop do supply a cost per unit at monthly review but that simply takes your overall cost per month including standing charge and divides it by your kWh used. For may June that figure is calculated by powershop as 12.87p per kWh.

I prefer to use my calculation to compare electricity costs. Works for me anyhow

When is the best time to give them a meter reading? I assume this is at the end of your current period rather than the 1st of every month?

On the my account page the 15th is marked by the grey box (current period) and the 1 in a circle shows on the 16th.

Assuming the above is correct should I submit a reading on the 15th or the 16th?
  • Best time for a meter reading?

    Either:
Last thing on the day before the date circled in "Power Organiser" calendar in the "Balance" Tab on the website

    or
First thing (<09:00) on the circled date.

Ok, thanks. I normally take a reading before 0900 on the 1st of every month so will do an additional one on the 16th as well.

I read mine every day so I get extremely accurate usage predictions. The more you read it the better with powershop

Are there any electricity smartmeters that send data to the computer? My two solar panel inverters do so I can monitor what is happening from my comfy desktop PC chair. I have four years of detailed analysis in a spreadsheet.

Mick is correct - the circled day is the start of a new accounting period so I'd read the meter at 2359hrs on the 15th and enter it on the website/app as taken at 0000hrs on the 16th.

I am considering switching to Powershop Top Shopper and purchasing electric using their app. 62% of my electric usage is off peak so their current quote of 7.718 per KW looks attractive. Would like to hear from anyone who has a similar consumption pattern. Any pros and cons? I already have an EON Smart meter. . .
