A long time lurker of your diary, who lives south of the border. I too have type 2 diabetes, which I manage by diet alone as every medication I tried had horrible side effects. A friend of mine is studying nutrition and asked would I be a guinea pig for one of her classmates. Having nothing to lose I thought and everything to gain, I became a guinea pig. I have fibromyalgia and IBS as well. After a couple of sessions, (these sessions were supervised by tutor and class mates), she suggested I try the F.O.D.M.A.P. diet which is designed for IBS sufferers. Just search google for more details. It is a diet that cuts out some "normal" foods, but I have gained so much energy, lost weight, sugar cravings almost gone, tummy not so bloated and in other aspects my tummy is quite well behaved. It does not work for everyone and is hard work in the beginning, but for me it was worth it. Just thought I would post seeing as you are suffering with IBS badly.11

I’ve heard good results about the fodmap diet. A friend swears by it - totally changed his life.January spends - £587.589

I know a dietician who used the FODMAP diet herself - it's science rather than a fad. She found a couple of foods - onions and garlic I think - that affect her. She can still have a little but knows to go easy on them.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

hello puddle and thanks for delurking. I know that I need to sort out my diet and fodmap may be one to explore. However I also know when I’m in the right frame of mind to do something like this and it isn’t now. The ibs flare up, while probably influenced by diet, is more heavily stress related. This was confirmed by being accompanied by the headache from hell on days when I needed to meet deadlines. It’s been a busy few days and today is going to be a struggle with stuff needing done for two clients. Also, I’m annoyed with myself. A friend asked for some help with something work related. I’d too much on and should have said no but didn’t. I then realised that she’s someone I only hear from when something is needed but I put myself under additional pressure to help. This is the person who I helped get the job that I was ruled out of when her partner asked me to help. This is the first I had heard from her since that. I should know better.
right, enough whinging for one day. Onwards and upwards.

Shame about your friend.
Don't be annoyed with yourself, though - next time remind yourself what you've learned now and perhaps get rid of this particular 'tolerance'.
Nice to hear your tummy is settling though. I know completely what you mean about there being a time to do things and equally a time to leave them for another day. You can only do so much at once.
I hope your weekend is more relaxing.

So I’d just written that I thought I’d posted and I lost that. I appear to be encountering so many mse gremlins at present. So, I got one deadline piece of work done on Friday but not the other. I’m asking dh to help with that today. We have a new client related problem. Staff are coming back from a variety of absences and, due to gaps in service users, we don’t have the work for them. I need to come up with a list of one off tasks to keep people busy.I didn’t go in yesterday at all which was good. I even got some one offs sorted around the house. My headache eased as did my ibs but I still gave myself a lazy day. Yesterday we did some garden bits and pieces that are barely the tip of the iceberg but filled have a brown bin. A few pots are in a better shape. Tomorrow our friendly neighbourhood work man is due to be on site to do outside work. He is as familiar with this house as we are so we will unlock the back door and leave the keys in it as he knows that key ring covers the garage as well. DH will be working upstairs accompanied by the furry one and the builder will just work away at the damp bits that we marked out with chalk. He will also restore steps where magpies have eaten away at the wooden supports and left unsafe. We don’t know what our bill will be but these aren’t optional extras and he’s always worked with us in the past. I’m hopeful that the balance of my year end withdrawal will cover it.I have decided, given dh’s refusal to plan financially, that any additional funds e.g. prolific, will be used to pay a gardener. Despite our ad hoc efforts, we are not keeping on top of what’s needed. I also want to be able to enjoy the garden and I can’t. When we get through this current crisis, I am committed to being more social within my own home And this includes the garden. I have nice things that sit in cupboards gathering dust. I only use these when others visit. I also go out to meet people who could be entertained quite cheaply here. I need to stop believing that people will judge my efforts badly. I’m not a great cook but then again, the places where I meet people, aren’t fine dining. Seriously even if I only invite someone for breakfast once a month, it’d create an impetus to have a clean and tidy home and to make use of what I have. It will also hopefully enable me to identify what I will never use and get rid. Not belittling the losses people have suffered due to covid, I truly believe that the biggest tragedy could be if we all emerge unchanged. For me, this has been a wake up call to create a truly happy life. I’m worried that without recognition and effort, I could so easily back slide to getting by.
so, we have reinstated our emergency fund to its target level. If dh appears, he will advise of our current mortgage balance and I will update my sig. this will also record a weight loss of 3 lbs according to this morning’s discussion with mr wii. I’m back to being overweight which is brilliant when compared to being obese - the upside to ibs.
i have decided that bar Tilly tidies, I am not going to overpay my mortgage. Instead I will possibly increase payments to my regular saver offset pot as this gives slightly better tax free interest than the cost of the mortgage. I am also thinking of upping my monthly payment from the business as opposed to leaving it in a non interest paying account that I am charged for. Any increase will be within my tax allowance. As usual, lots of plans. I wonder what will come of them. We shall hopefully see.
today I am grateful for

A good tip when asked to do something/anything by someone is to say you'll need to check your diary, an you'll get back to them when you have. That way it gives you time to assess the request and who made it.Worth every penny of getting a gardener in. You'll get a lot more pleasure and stress release from a lovey garden than spending the money in a shop.I Believe.....
That it isn't always enough, to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery
Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.
happiness isn't achieved by getting extra things,
but by getting rid of the things that make you unhappy9 -
If you have surplus staff isn't it time to take back some of the hours you haven't been charging for? Love the idea of sorting your EF and paying a gardener. Getting those odd jobs done will be a weight off your mind as well.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030
