    Exeter.

Cathedral, university, hospital with A&E, airport, close to the coast, fast trains to London, rugby team, football team and a Lakeland and John Lewis.

    Job's a good'un.

We'll be moving there when I retire in three years.

Bristol and Bath are lovely places but way overpriced compared to salaries. I found Cardiff was great for the big city life with low rent/house prices. You can also commute to Bristol quickly via train or car (I did this for a while to get a better paid job). I know lots of engineers who work in and around Bristol.

I ended up in Zone 6 of London due to the much higher salaries for central London jobs (and my wife wanted a job over there). 15 minute train to central London plus big house and countryside on the doorstep + many good state schools (Bromley borough, 2nd after Kensington this year) = perfect location to bring up a family. Would never actually want to live in central London, but I can tolerate working there a couple of days per week and working from home the rest of the time!
To err is human, but it is against company policy.
