My next car will definitely be a diesel (unless I win the lottery and can afford hybrid)

I do about 18k miles a year and the mpg is much higher for diesel.

Also I live near the Irish Border and get my diesel for about 10p a litre less than petrol

Tomorrow I change my Motability C-Max 2.0 TDci Auto, for a Hyundai Tucson 1.7 CRDi Auto. I would have loved another C-Max, but Brexit and the drop in the GBP, have made the deposit rocket in price.

The Tucson, with a much lower deposit, is made in the Czech Republic and the C-Max in Spain. They are both in the EU. Go figure.

I've been driving diesel cars for about 20 years and don't go in many big towns so will be staying with diesel.

It really depends on what's available to buy. I have never liked diesel but drive a diesel car because the model and spec I wanted doesn't come in a petrol variant and neither did any of the alternatives I was considering.

I have an old Freelander diesel. It's quite happy pootling around the local A and B roads. Once or twice a year, it actually gets to see a motorway.

If it had a DPF, I wonder how many times I would have had to replace it by now.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Luckily I lease my diesel, so when it goes back I'll get a petrol, ready for research to catch up and penalise petrol owners again...

Governments simply have no idea what to do about vehicle pollution. Research keeps on coming from various scientific bodies, contradicted by special interest groups and aggravated by the Greens.

On the one hand, the various vehicle factories in the UK employ huge numbers of people, in the factories themselves, in the supply chains, the parts makers and accessory producers.

On the other hand, we live in a relatively small country with a very high density of vehicular traffic, producing seriously dangerous amounts of pollution in urban areas.

The solutions all require serious and intelligent thought and research. They are also expensive in terms of money and employment.

I live in one of the cities that has NOx emission issues (primarily from diesel vehicles), and is likely to fail EU emission standards, and is looking at how to deal with it. I also sit in the same office as the guy who deals with air quality planning and policy. The Clean Air Zones don't include any plans to charge or tax diesel car drivers here - it will only be commercial diesel vehicles who enter specific zones within the city - probably some sort of permit. To be honest, the arguments at the moment are whether to include nearby motorways as that will really make life difficult. They haven't even started working out how much to charge.
Diesel vehicles are being looked at as they affect local air quality, but cars aren't as significant as buses, wagons, vans etc. I don't think any car driver will notice any difference when the CAZ's come in.

I'm hoping my next car will be petrol/electric hybrid, but the cars I'll likely be looking at are pretty much all diesel (SUV). If I could get one with a 2l+ engine anymore I'd quite happily go back to petrol as my mileage isn't very high.

Yet investing in public transport never seems to occur to them.
