I have a diesel now, my first ever - I ONLY bought a diesel as we were told they were better, fuel was cheaper, etc... so I went with the "advised item" and not the petrol that I'd have known/liked/understood....

Next time it's definitely petrol for me though. I was lied to/ripped off, then sent up the river without a paddle.

This car's 11 years old, so not sure when I'll get another, hopefully 5+ years.

That's why you shouldn't just blindly listen to what your told and do your own research. Diesel is almost always more expensive than Petrol at fuel stations so it would have been easy for you to see that what you were told was wrong.

But diesel cars generally do better MPG so overall you will save money on fuel so maybe that's what they meant.

Since I do 20k+ a year, it's a no-brainer. I've driven the Auris Hybrid but found it about as responsive as a damp squib, so that puts me off the Rav4 - Toyota only automatics in hybrid now and I have an auto licence.

If I were buying a 'new' car today I'd probably go electric. Some second hand ones not too expensive now. Although the battery lease is not cheap

Diesel was cheaper before the boom in diesels

And still is in Europe. Only in the UK is it more expensive.

That was quite a while ago so even if they bought their diesel car from new (11 years ago) it would have still been more expensive than petrol.

If I were to do the mileage that I was doing up to 3 months ago, I would buy a diesel. As my mileage has dropped considerably (cycling distance to the train station), when my car needs replacing I will probably buy a petrol. I've always been told petrol for short hops, diesel for long drives - and so buy accordingly.

It's nothing new. People complain about being missold diesels, but they weren't. They just didn't ask themselves the question "what do I need the car for?".

My old car was a diesel. While it gave decent MPG, I hated the unresponsive throttle in 1st gear and the rattly drive train. I also had to replace the turbo. Now have a smooth and responsive petrol. It give me half of the MPG of my previous car, but in every other way its better

I think diesel had become the default choice when in reality for a lot of people it wasnt the best choice.

I wouldnt consider diesel again unless i was doing big miles per year.

I did consider one a year ago, but after finding about DPF, I rarely do long distance high speed driving, so thought don't need the hassle.
