i just realised the risk my sons hamster took! he would escape from cage (one of those futuristic plastic things) get out of sons room - get past dog on landing - then into my bedroom - (i didnt close door all the way) onto bed - past cat on my feet - and then spend night curled up by me - unless i woke up and put him back (even then i often woke up to find him back again! I thought hamsters played in their cage all night!!! sons other hamsters did! not this one - dusty preferred to spend the night with me and nothing would stop him!!!
  • We are aware of the wires issue, wouldn't like to have fried hamster or even a stumpy one. Here are a couple of links to Percy in his big wheel, and Mabel when we first got her and before she moved into her larger quarters. I don't think most hamster cages are anywhere big enough for the sort of running around they like to do, but it can get expensive to expand the facilities. I've taken to combining ebay cages with my own designs in plywood and perspex. Percy has seven cages and 9 pods all joined together with tubes. Mabel has 3 cages and three pods so far with plans for a major upgrade in the new year. They also get to run around the room in excercise balls during the evening.

No cages are big enough in my opinion, for most animals and birds, and bowls/tanks for fish. The animals come cheap then the housing is expensive.Wrong way round in my opinion.Well done you for giving them a better life,if only all creatures were so well cared for.

Are any of their cages deep enough to burrow in too? As that may stop his escapism if he can burrow?

One of my hamsters escaped on a regular basis, they're regular Houdinis. Sasha (my ginger one) was sat in the middle of my bed one day when I came home. I looked at him adn he's tame so he let me pick him up and put him in, then I put a book on top to stop him getting out.

However, one of my mum's (another Sasha, this one a Russian) escaped and was found sat on a roll of carpet behind the sofa making herself at home

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.
  • Handsome little fella, very elegant in black!

  • I have one of those, she gets out of it!!! I don't even know how, it's like she has Spiderman sticky on her paws.

I have a photo somewhere of a purpose built hammy palace that spanned a 6ft high bookcase using the Habitrail components. Looked superb!!! Will see if I can find it!
