Strongly recommend ferplast cages. I had the Ferplast Jenny for my Hammy, it was a rat cage so it was like a hammy mansion. No problems here. Other than that get a gerbilarium.

I have a photo somewhere of a purpose built hammy palace that spanned a 6ft high bookcase using the Habitrail components. Looked superb!!! Will see if I can find it!

Don't think it's on this PC but look what I found on google lol

I never had a hamster escape from a wire cage, and the ones I had, I could barely poke my finger through them, so they would be quite cat safe! Only annoying thing is when they decide to chew on the bars all night!

I had a plastic cage for one of my hamsters and she managed to drag her plastic house over, stand on it, and chew through the opening, my mum was not amused at 3am when she went for a wee and saw a ginger hamster staring at her (She hates all animals!) I then put a very heavy ashtray on the top of the lid, and she STILL managed to get out. She went into a wire cage the next day lol.
  • I went up my Dads house last night and he and his wife are looking after my hamster (due to my Cat) I was sitting watching Tv and then next thing I know my Hammy is running along the floor. I think my Hamster is an escape artist as he escapes every week. It is either that or my Dad is trying to lose him lol.

I have a perfecto glass tank which although a bit expensive is absolutely brilliant. Its heavy to clean out but it looks great, lots of room, and most importantly no escapes! What type of hammy are we talking - syrian or dwarf?

I am thinking of buying one i am in the process of reading up on them as i have no idea how to care for one ,i just have a few questions for anyone who has one
Do there cages smell ? i would imagine they would smell if you didnt clean them regulary but i mean are they smelly animals
I am abit worried about getting one and one of the children letting it out of its cage how difficult would one be to catch around the home if it did get out ?
Do they like being held and fussed ?are they a friendly pet

Just another question whats the difference between a gerbel & hampster which would you recommend as a pet ?
  • In my experiance neither.......... They are fast little critters and do not like the cages and as soon as you let them out they rush around and want to be free........... Mine were very frustrated at being held and no good for small children, they gnaw at the cage trying to escape and of course are nocturnal.......... They are very clean though......... If they do escape and they will, expect hours of misery trying to catch them............

Had hamsters and gerbils. Hammies are nocturnal and gerbils aren't so gerbils are more fun but you need two as they don't like to live alone. Hammies (if Syrian) HAVE to live alone but Russians can be had in pairs.

They don't smell if you clean them out regularly.
